Having seen his side capitulate in the closing stages of the 2018/19 Championship campaign, it is not at all surprising that Marcelo Bielsa is looking to launch a major overhaul of his squad between now and August.

However, whereas the Whites will be glad to see the back of some of their club's under-performers, they may end up regretting the decision to let Hugo Diaz leave this summer.

Confirming his departure on Twitter, the 22-year-old thanked Leeds for making him feel welcome during his two-year stint at Elland Road.

Although it is not yet certain where Diaz's next destination will be, he could turn out to be a real coup for whoever he joins this summer.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out three reasons why we think that Leeds letting the defender move on to pastures new is a huge mistake.

Check them out below...

He was fantastic for the club's under-23 side last season

Although he played no part for the Whites' senior side last season, Diaz was a mainstay at the back for the club's under-23s.

Utterly fantastic throughout the year, the Spaniard helped Leeds win the Professional Development League-North title in March and the overall competition last month.

Whereas there is no doubting that the chasm between under-23s football and the Championship is huge, when you consider the consistency of his performances at this particular level, there is no reason why Diaz couldn't have made a real impact in the second-tier over the coming years.

He could have provided some much-needed back-up for Liam Cooper and Pontus Jansson

Although it would be naive to suggest that Diaz would have been a regular starter for Leeds next season if he had stayed at the club, he could at the very least have offered some much-needed back-up to Pontus Jansson and Liam Cooper.

Having suffered considerably as a team during the 2018/19 campaign when the duo had to watch on from the sidelines due to injury, the Whites may now face having to cope with having even less options to choose from in defence.

He was not given enough opportunities to prove himself by Bielsa

Despite being at Leeds for the best part of two years, Diaz didn't start a single game for the club with his one and only appearance coming as a substitute in a 3-1 defeat to Preston North End in April 2018.

Whereas he didn't exactly pull up any trees against the Lilywhites, to not play him at all based on this performance alone was a fairly ruthless decision to make by Bielsa.

If the 63-year-old had given Diaz a chance to at least express himself in the cup competitions, the defender could have quite easily have ended up proving his worth to his manager.
