Marcelo Bielsa had a bullish approach with the Leeds United squad he inherited back in the summer, with the Argentine axing those players that he felt were surplus to requirements.

Leeds had a big squad, but Bielsa wanted to work with a smaller one, with a number of fringe players having their contract terminated or finding themselves out on loan.

Amongst those in the latter category is Laurens De Bock, with the left-back underwhelming in his six months at Elland Road.

Now, Football Insider are reporting that the 26-year-old will be heading out of Leeds permanently in the summer, with the left-back free to find another club ahead of next season.

That will come as no surprise to Leeds’ supporters, particularly after some of the poor outings the defender had in a White shirt last year.

Here, we look at three reasons why it is no surprise…

De Bock failed to adapt in England

It is no secret that De Bock struggled to adapt to the English game.

He had some good performances, but a dreadful evening at Derby will be something he’s remembered for.

The full-back never recovered from that and didn’t look cut out for the Championship.

Leeds’ current options

Barry Douglas and Ezgjan Alioski are currently competing for the left-back berth, whilst Tom Pearce and Leif Davis are younger options.

Bielsa has some outstanding options on the left of defence and there’s no room for a player like De Bock.

Bielsa’s preference

As noted, Bielsa wanted to work with a smaller squad at Elland Road, which led to an exodus of players.

He likes players who offer solutions in a number of positions, which is why Leeds have so many options at left-back.

There’s no way he would bring De Bock back in to provide cover.
