If you had told Huddersfield fans at the start of the season that 17 games into the campaign they would be sitting comfortably in the play-off places, most would probably have laughed at you.

However, 17 games into the season and it has became a reality for Huddersfield, as they sit just 5 points away from the automatic promotion places.

With that being said, Huddersfield are without a win in their last 3 league games, and are in danger of letting their hard work early on sink.

A disappointing 3-2 defeat to Cardiff meant that yet again they failed to capitalise on a great opportunity to close down the gap separating them from the automatic promotion places, but with January fast approaching, the window to improve their current squad is getting closer.

Here are THREE reasons why Huddersfield should look to sign a striker in January if they want to carry on with their push for promotion to the Premier League....

Struggling for goals

After 17 games Huddersfield have managed to score just 19 goals, which is on average just over 1.1 goals per game.

They have also failed to score more then 1 goal from 11 of those games, which has led to countless wasted opportunities where a goal would've earned them those vital 3 points.

As they have the lowest goal tally from the top 6, its clear to see that if they want to keep up with the competition, then they must look to improve in front of goal.

Nahki Wells

Speculation has developed over the last week about striker Nahki Wells looking to leave the club in January for a fee of around £8 million.

This would mean a striker departing the club and as they have already been struggling for goals this season, this would only mean more trouble for the club.

However not all is as bad as it seems, as the 26-year-old has only managed to contribute 3 league goals this season.

And with £8 million potentially coming into the club, it surely means that they could find a suitable striker to solve their struggles in front of goal.

Squad depth

This season Huddersfield have adapted to a formation with 2 up front, which so far seems to have worked in terms of results.

However with Nahki Wells looking set to leave, and the mid-week games coming thick and fast meaning fitness is a worry, Huddersfield could struggle to maintain this style of play.

The club's top scorer Elias Kachunga has been the only player looking comfortable in front of goal this season for Huddersfield, bagging himself 6 goals.

But with this being Huddersfield's 3rd consecutive season in the Championship, the fans will know just how easily an injury can occur, with the amount of games the players must go through.

With that being said there does't appear to be any suitable candidate to replace Kachunga if he was to pick up an injury.

Also, should Huddersfield want to continue with their 2 up front formation, they must find someone to partner him in January if Nahki Wells was to leave, making a striker a suitable candidate to search for in the upcoming window.
