Having fallen just short in their quest for promotion from League One last month, Sunderland may now be powerless to prevent Bryan Oviedo from leaving this summer.

According to the Northern Echo, Club Brugge are reportedly interested in signing the defender having initially been linked with a move for him during the January transfer window.

Although Oviedo has enjoyed a fruitful two-year spell with the Black Cats, he may find it hard to turn down a move to the Belgian giants who will be playing in the Champions League later this year.

If the Costa Rican international does decide to leave, it is imperative that Jack Ross brings in an adequate replacement for him as a failure to do so will not help Sunderland's cause next season.

Keeping this in mind, let's take a look at three players that the Wearside-based outfit should be targeting over the coming months...

Lee Brown

A mainstay in Portsmouth's team last season, Lee Brown was utterly outstanding for Kenny Jackett's side and would be a fantastic addition for Sunderland if they can convince him to make the switch.

With over 160 appearances to his name at League One level, he would bring a wealth of experience with him to the Stadium of Light which could prove crucial for the club's hopes of securing a top-two finish next season.

Whereas Pompey will be keen to keep Brown at Fratton Park, Ross could secure the services of Brown if he is willing to splash the cash on the 28-year-old.

Harry Toffolo

Named in the League Two PFA Team of the Year for his outstanding contributions for Lincoln City, Harry Toffolo clearly has the potential to become a top quality full-back and so the Black Cats must consider swooping for him if Oviedo does indeed leave.

Having played at League One level for the likes of Peterborough United and Doncaster Rovers in recent seasons, the 23-year-old should have no issues with making the step up in level that will be required.

Yet given Toffolo's importance to the Imps, it may take a big bid to lure him away from Sincil Bank as Daniel Cowley will be wanting to keep his best players at the club ahead of their imminent return to the third tier.

Luke Garbutt

Despite not reaching the heights that were expected of him at Everton, Luke Garbutt could turn out to be a shrewd signing for Sunderland if they are looking to bring in an attacking-minded full-back.

Capable of a devilish delivery from wide areas, the 25-year-old could be a great replacement for Oviedo, especially when you consider that he was mightily impressive during the 2018/19 campaign with Oxford United.

Although a permanent switch would be extremely pricey, there is no reason why they shouldn't try to bring him in on a season-long loan from the Toffees.
