It's been another monumentally disappointing season for Reading, a 17th placed finish deemed not good enough by fans.

But the club's incredibly brilliant academy is still the shining beacon of the Berkshire based side, with plenty look forward to from the club's youngsters who are continuing to impress at youth level.

After an overhaul at the club last summer, Brian McDermott is looking to go in a different direction and promote players from the academy to add more players who want to fight for the bade to the side.

Plenty of players have been out on loan and impressed in the Football League. Fans have been begging for a fair few to come back and fill in spots that have been left by underperforming players.

So, as a result, we're going to be looking at the players who could be in contention to be blooded in the first team next year.

Tariqe Fosu

Tariqe Fosum

When Tariqe Fosu came off the bench in the first half against Derby County on the final day of last season and utterly destroyed hopes of promotion for the Rams, we all thought he'd win young player of the year for the Championship.

He backed this up with a stunning pre-season where he was probably the club's outstanding player, but for some reason has yet to be included in a Reading squad this year.

After a successful loan spell at Accrington Stanely, he's ready to make the step us to the first team.

He's got all the attributes of a brilliant winger, and will surely be performing for Reading next year.

Dominic Samuel

Reading have been needing a good, quality striker for years and they could have one ready made in Dominic Samuel.

After a loan spell at Coventry last year, fans were amazed he didn't get put into the first team, eventually going on loan to Gillingham.

Gills fans have been extremely impressed by Samuel, with many claiming that he was vital to any hopes of Gillingham reaching the play-offs.

With McDermott admitting the strikers at the club have not been nearly good enough this season, there's no doubt that Reading will be promoting Samuel to the first team next year, where he'll hope to start scoring at a Championship level.

Josh Barrett

Josh Barrett may not have gone out on loan this year, but he's been extremely impressive at youth level this year and made his debut against Preston at half time only a couple of weeks ago.

He was extremely impressive during his 45 minute stint, whilst making his first start against Blackburn away on the final day, where he was steady but less impressive.

Despite only being 17, there's no doubt that Barrett can make the step up to first team football next year at the Madejski Stadium.
