Nottingham Forest endured a fairly miserable evening against League Two side Bury, losing an early goal and going down to 10-men before finding a route back into the game.

They triumphed on penalties, just, but the match perhaps gave an insight into some of the frailties within the squad. By rights, even with a reserve side, they should have put the game to bed before the half hour mark.

The match offered a chance for some fringe players to get a run out, or at least that would have been the ideal scenario. Instead, the likes of Daryll Murphy found themselves in the line up and struggling to break down a resolute Shakers side.

The result stretched Forest's unbeaten spell to four games, but with three draws amongst that run, there is still plenty left to discuss and questions that need answering.

Here are three questions surrounding Karanka that still need answering.

Bury were strong and disciplined, but Forest should have had the know-how to break them down and score goals. The same could be said for the recent game against West Brom, a game they failed to kill off.

With such a rich array of attacking players, should they be turning draws into wins?

Whilst Ryan Yates made his Forest debut last night, Karanka doesn't seem focused on bringing any of the other talent through. Jorge Grant was farmed out on loan to Luton Town, whilst Zach Clough and Ben Brereton look set to leave the City Ground.

Is the manager right to clear the decks, or are the likes of Brereton being overlooked at exactly the wrong time?

With the huge influx of players, it is always going to be difficult to bring them together effectively and there's going to be an element of squad rotation.

However, early signs are that chopping and changing is damaging the flow of the side. Daryll Murphy has already started and been dropped, so has Ben Watson and Joe Lolley. Against Reading Dias and Carvalho, the two marquee signings, both came off after 56 minutes too.

Having a consistent seven or eight every week is crucial, especially as the spine of the team.
