Chelsea are said to be lining-up a bid for Brentford's Ollie Watkins, according to The Daily Star.

Brentford have been the surprise package in the Championship this season. Thomas Frank in his first full-season in charge has made promotion contenders out of his side, after what was a slow start to the campaign.

The Bees will leave Griffin Park this season and could well adorn their new home with Premier League football next season, and the man behind the charge is Ollie Watkins.

He was brought to the club from Exeter City in 2017 and played on the wing in his first two seasons, reaching double-figures for league goals in both.

Frank though was keen to deploy him in the central position at the start of the season, and what a masterstroke it's turned out to be - Watkins has scored 18 goals in 28 Championship games so far this season.

Now though it looks like Watkins could heading across West London and linking up with Frank Lampard at Chelsea. Here's three qualities that Chelsea fans can expect from the striker:

Poacher's goals

Watkins had all the traits of a centre-forward before he was deployed as one, but few expected him to be such a natural poacher. He scores some fine goals for Brentford but the bulk come from inside the six-yard box, being in the right place at the right time to steal a goal.

He's a natural no.9 and a real poacher in-front of goal. Very similar to Tammy Abraham in a sense, Watkins is capable of scoring the spectacular goals but his short-range game cannot be over-looked.

Pace and power

Another trait which favours the sole striker, Watkins is blessed with natural pace and power. As a winger, he would blast past full-backs and his pace has fared him well in his new role too.

Being as strong as he is as well allows him to lead the line on his own, holding the ball up and bustling his way through the box to get on the end of crosses.

He's a real physical presence and stepping up to the Premier League, he should have no problems in adjusting in that department.

Effective in a three

Watkins might not have been as prolific this season if he wasn't accompanied by Bryan Mbeumo and Said Benrahma up-front. The trio make up the fiercest attack in the Championship and between them, they've scored 34 goals in the league.

Frank dons a 4-3-3 at Brentford and that allows the front-three to stay as that, and play in the opposition half. Lampard might have to adjust his side to fit in Watkins, or Watkins may have to adjust in-turn.

But with some of the wide players that Chelsea have - Pedro, Willian, Pulisic etc - Watkins could quite easily step in to this Chelsea set-up, and be just as prolific and effective as he is for Brentford.
