Charlton Athletic are monitoring out of favour Rangers central midfielder Greg Docherty, with the club seeking a loan move for the 23-year-old, according to reports in the Daily Record.

Doubts were cast over Docherty's short term future at Rangers, with Steven Gerrard previously hinting that he would be open to sending the midfielder out on loan to help him get game time.

However, the reports suggest that the Addicks face stiff competition from Sunderland for the 23-year-old. He has made a total of five appearances for Rangers this term, with none of them coming in the Scottish Premiership.

Gerrard may feel it is best for Docherty to get some gametime under his belt, so here are three qualities Charlton can expect from him if The Valley ends up being his destination of choice...

QUIZ: Can you name every Charlton top goalscorer from the past fifteen seasons?

Puts a shift in every game

Docherty is a box-to-box central midfield player, and that means that he covers a lot of ground each game whilst on the pitch.

The 23-year-old spent time on loan at Shrewsbury Town last season, and his former manager, Sam Ricketts had his say on the Scot's work rate.

“Every game he gives his all, he doesn’t leave anything behind," Ricketts told the Shropshire Star last May at the end of Docherty's loan spell with the Shrews.

Chips in with goals

The element of Docherty's that caught the eye whilst he at Shrewsbury was his attacking intent, particularly his goalscoring form.

He found the net a total of ten times during the season, which is not a bad return for a midfielder.

The 23-year-old likes to make forward runs with the ball, and often beats players on the run to create opportunities for himself and others in the team.

Provides assists

As well as chipping in with crucial goals for his team, Docherty also gets other players into the game.

Last season for Shrewsbury, he tallied up eleven assists.

These were from a variety of methods. Docherty has an eye for a key pass in the final third, and can beat players to create the space elsewhere on the pitch. One of his best traits, however, are his deliveries into the box.
