Rotherham United have settled into Championship life well after their promotion from League One last season.

Paul Warne’s men are currently two points above the relegation zone, and sit 19th in the division after 17 matches.

It has been an acceptable start to the campaign for the Millers who have been tipped as one of the sides that could be back in the third tier come May.

Michael Smith was one of Rotherham’s leading marksmen last term to get them into the second tier, scoring eight goals in their promotion-winning campaign.

Having only managed three this term, and still adjusting to the Championship, the six-foot striker is certainly a talisman for his team.

They are a better side with him in and have a way of playing that benefits the striker’s abilities.

He has been one of their better players, too and with the January transfer window approaching, there could be potential interest in the 27-year-old who still a lot to offer.

If Smith has his head turned and the club sanction a move away, they will not do so until a replacement has been sought.

So if the striker is poached, here are three potential Smith replacements Rotherham must consider.

Kieffer Moore has nine goals in 16 appearances or Barnsley this term as they sit fourth in League One.

The 26-year-old manager 17 goals in the Championship last term and is hitting form once more.

Should Michael Smith leave, a more than adequate replacement would be the Barnsley man.

It would probably be a better signing then that of Smith, should Rotherham deem it him a principal target.

Entering the last six months of his deal with Sheffield United, Conor Washington is indeed a player that Rotherham should be looking at.

If played regularly and the team play to his strengths, the Millers could have one hell of a signing on their books.

It hasn’t worked out at Bramall Lane since his summer move from QPR, and he could look to leave with Rotherham needing to be one of the first in the queue to sign him.

The Gillingham striker might be a tall player, and many would think he is just a target man, but Tom Eaves is more than that.

He is a goalscorer and a striker who is capable of playing with the ball at his feet.

Eaves has already scored 11 goals in League One this term, and that follows on from his impressive haul of 18 last year, too.

The 26-year-old would be a welcome addition to the squad to replace Michael Smith if he leaves in the New York Stadium in the New Year.
