Reading secured the signing of Inter Milan striker George Puscas for a fee of around £7.5m on Wednesday evening.

Former Reading Chronicle journalist Courtney Friday reported that Birmingham City made a last-ditch attempt to sway Puscas towards the West Midlands before the Royals secured his signature.

This move came as a surprise to Reading fans, with the club being under a soft transfer embargo earlier on in the summer for breaching the EFL's profit and sustainability rules. However, cleverly structured deals for incoming players and sell-on fees from former players like Jack Stacey have meant that the Royals have been able to spend money in this transfer market.

The club have strengthened their attack with the signings of Lucas Boye, Lucas Joao and Ovie Ejaria, as well as Puscas. This was much needed after the departures of Callum Harriott, loanee Nelson Oliveira and Icelandic striker Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

All these signings that have been made are likely to have a big impact on the club, being the calibre of players that Jose Gomes needs to push for a top-half finish with the Berkshire side.

Here are three potential knock-on effects from Reading's signing of 23-year-old George Puscas...

An increase in the 'Goals For' column

Reading have made quite a few attacking signings in this window. Not only have they brought in the players needed to create chances in Ovie Ejaria and Lucas Boye, they have also brought in Puscas and Joao to convert these chances.

After the poor attacking performance against Sheffield Wednesday last weekend, this was a concern for Reading fans who wanted the club to get off to a quick start in the Championship. They simply can not have a repeat of the last couple of seasons, where they were hovering just above the relegation zone.

The club scored 49 goals in 46 league games last season, averaging just over one goal per game. With these attacking signings, this total is likely to be comfortably passed, with the Royals wanting a top half finish this season. The signings that they have made are a statement of intent.

Novakovich to be left out

Even though the USA international has impressed out on loan on two different spells in the Netherlands previously, his opportunities at the Madejski Stadium may be limited by the signings that have been made this summer.

He may even struggle to get on the bench, with many players ahead of him in the pecking order at this moment in time. New signings Puscas and Joao, French forward Yakou Meite and young promising forward Danny Loader will all be competing for a spot in the squad with Novakovich.

The likely omission of the American academy graduate will disappoint some fans, who had been eager to see the striker play. He spent last season out on loan in the Eredivisie (Dutch first division), scoring 10 goals in 31 games. Whether he can win a spot back in the Reading side is questionable

A possible formation change?

Two of the biggest signings that have been made by the Berkshire side this season were forwards Lucas Joao and George Puscas. Will Gomes be prepared to leave a player out in order to play a 4-2-3-1 formation?

Alternatively, he could play both players up front and switch the formation to accommodate both of these signings in his starting lineup. After looking at how thin the squad was earlier this summer, it's staggering to say that Gomes is now spoilt for choice in terms of the options he has.

It's now down to the manager to get his team to gel and fire the team up the Championship table. If he doesn't do this, he may be under pressure from owner Dai Yongge, who has invested significantly in the squad this summer.
