Josh Vela has been looking particular impressive for Bolton this season, which is no mean feat considering their spectacular fall from grace after a great start.

They seemed to be the club surprising everyone early doors, but since the opening few fixtures they've sunk into the relegation fight everyone expected of them.

Some of the summer signings have not settled at all, Christian Doidge has struggled with the step up and Erhun Oztumer hasn't been the creative forced many hoped he would be after his Walsall switch.

24-year old Vela has been solid though, working incredibly hard in a side increasingly under pressure. Whilst primarily a defensive midfielder, he's operated across a midfield three with comfort. As they've fallen down the table they've certainly missed him, he's been out injured as they've imploded.

Who could replace him if he were poached this summer? It wouldn't be easy, Bolton haven't fully emerged from their troubles earlier in the season and the budget is tight, but there's a handful of candidates who could come into the side.

FLW examines the possibilities.

If a loan deal could be struck, perhaps Liam Bridcutt would be a good option.

He's hard-working, he knows the Championship and he's bring a real steel and grit to the Wanderers ranks.

They might be able to afford a full time transfer, depending on any fee they attracted for Vela.

He might be aging, but he's out of favour at Stoke and would be excellent in a relegation battle.

Charlie Adam is a fighter, a man who has built a career out of words such as 'dogged' and 'resilient'.

Even if Vela doesn't leave, Bolton should move for Adam.

Ojo is currently plying his trade at Scunthorpe, but could offer a little more than the other two candidates as he can get forward as well as tidy up in the middle third.

The Belgian played plenty for the Iron last season as they approached the play off race in League One and he might be a wise acquisition, if Bolton were willing to take a pun ton a League One face.
