Sheffield United will look to get back on the hunt for automatic promotion after a short international break, with a short trip to Yorkshire rivals Rotherham United next weekend.

The Blades will look to get back to winning ways having won just one of their previous five league games, with Chris Wilder's men sitting 4th in the Championship standings just one point off the top-two places.

After a week off with international duty, Wilder would have no doubt been drawing up a list of potential January transfer targets - players that will bolster the Blades' promotion push after going off the boil in the last month.

We have seen in the Championship that anyone can beat anyone and injuries can occur to key players when it is least expected, therefore squad depth will be key in the Blades' quest for promotion.

Here, we take a look at three positions Sheffield United must consider strengthening in January.

The first position that United must consider strengthening in January is their attacking midfield options - or the number 10 role as it is more widely known.

Wilder usually utilises a 5-2-1-2 formation, with Mark Duffy often occupying the hole in behind the two forwards - but at 33 years of age, it is now time that the Blades look for long-term replacements.

Having already been linked with Birmingham City's Jota and Sunderland's George Honeyman over the last month or so, perhaps Wilder will look to bolster this position in January.

In terms of their forwards, perhaps their striking options need re-assessing in the winter.

This may seem odd at first - they have 11-goal forward Billy Sharp doing a marvellous job of leading the line, with David McGoldrick and Leon Clarke both trading places beside him.

But apart from the trio, they only have Conor Washington as back-up, who just hasn't settled at Bramall Lane making just one start in the league thus far.

The Blades have been recently linked with Premier League duo Shane Long and Jermain Defoe in recent weeks, and I for one wouldn't be too surprised to see one of them arrive at Bramall Lane in January.

Their left wing-back position is another area that could perhaps do with strengthening.

This does not mean that Enda Stevens should be dropped from the Blades squad - the Irishman has been magnificent for Wilder's men this term.

But with Daniel Lafferty as their only back-up, it is unlikely that he'll be at Bramall Lane for much longer having made just one appearance this term.
