A common problem that Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett has had to deal with so far this campaign has been to try and accommodate all of the players in his squad, which is proving to be a challenge.

As it stands, there are four players vying for a sole striking spot, another four fighting it out for the starting right-back position, as well as competition for places in midfield.

Naturally, that means that the players on the fringes of the Pompey squad are not getting the minutes on the pitch they would ideally want to have.

That also applies to the young players in Jackett's squad, who may feel that a loan move to another club would be a more desirable option, with first-team minutes looking far from likely for them in the immediate future.

With that being the case, FLW takes a look at three young Pompey players that may choose to exercise their option to head out on loan to improve their development...

QUIZ: Can you name Portsmouth's club player of the season from the last 15 years?

Matthew Casey

The 20-year-old centre back has come through Portsmouth's academy system, signing his first professional contract with the south coast club in June of this year.

He had been on loan at National League South side Havant & Waterlooville for the early stage of this season, but was recalled in October after making just two appearances for the Hawks.

Kenny Jackett has put it on record that the club are seeking another loan deal for Casey, and the club will want assurances from interested clubs that the 20-year-old will be played regularly.

Alex Bass

The 21-year-old has asserted himself as Kenny Jackett's No.2 goalkeeper, behind Craig MacGillivray.

He is now ahead of Luke McGee in the pecking order at the club, but a loan spell for the youngster would be good for his development, as he has featured just twice in the league for Kenny Jackett's side this season between the posts.

He spent time last season on-loan at Torquay United, and his manager may feel that another temporary spell away from Fratton Park is required in January to improve Bass' experience of men's football.

Andy Cannon

The 23-year-old has had limited opportunities at Pompey since signing for the club in January of this year from Rochdale.

The central midfielder has found it difficult to break into the team, as Ben Close and Tom Naylor have nailed down the starting spots in the side.

Therefore, Cannon may want to get some first-team minutes under his belt elsewhere, as the chance for the 23-year-old to break into the Pompey starting XI looks unlikely at this stage.
