Plymouth Argyle have made it to Wembley for the first time in 20 years, as they take on AFC Wimbledon in the League Two play-off final on Bank Holiday Monday.

At the start of the season, many Argyle fans would have been extremely pleased if their season ended in a trip to the national stadium, but they could have avoided that as they were in the top three for the lion share of the season.

In the end, they were pipped by Oxford and Bristol Rovers, but they will be confident of their chances of following them to the third tier.

This season, they have a very well balanced squad, with a first XI that not many in this division could match. The thing that brought them down, however, was a lack of depth, and that will more than likely be Derek Adams's main priority this summer.

Honorable mentions from this list go to Luke McCormick, who yet again has proved to be a reliable figure in between the sticks, and Gary Sawyer, who's sensational first season back at Home Park saw him as one of the most popular players on the club's player of the season vote.

Also, Carl McHugh could easily have made it into this three, as his holding play for the Pilgrims has been simply sensational, proving vital in their promotion bid.

So here, in the opinion of FLW's Ryan Evans, are THREE Plymouth Argyle players that are worth their weight in gold....

Curtis Nelson

Curtis Nelson

With 245 appearances from his seven years at the club, Nelson was made club captain in April 2013, at just 19-years of age. He has been in a league of his own this season, almost ever-present in Adams's team.

His vision and ability to spot danger has helped him cover for his team mates when needed, and it will be very tough for any striker in the league to dominate him.

A bad sign for the Green Army, however, is that it hasn't gone unnoticed.

He is out of contract at the end of this season, but it seems almost impossible that he would not get offered another.

Jamille Matt

Jamille MattJamille Matt

Matt signed on loan for the rest of the season from League One Fleetwood, making his debut in the defeat to Accrington in March.

He has seven goals in his last eleven matches for the Pilgrims, including two in the play-off semi-final first leg against Portsmouth which set the tie up for his side.

Having a striker who can score goals is invaluable, and Argyle went through a spell just before Matt's rise to prominence that cried out for someone who could stick the ball in the back of the net on demand.

His contract at Highbury ends this summer, so it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that Matt could be on his way to Home Park next season. They would certainly miss him if Adams doesn't bring him in.

Graham Carey

Graham Carey

Carey is Argyle's 'little magician', and controls pretty much every attack.

He can pick the most difficult of passes, and almost always tests the goalkeeper when he gets a free-kick in a shooting position.

He was, in my opinion, Argyle's man of the match in the second leg against Portsmouth, where his beautiful cross left Peter Hartley with a back-post header to win the tie in stoppage time. As well as that, he could have scored a few himself and striker Matt is guilty of missing a clear-cut opportunity earlier on in the second half.

He was relatively unknown before coming south, but started his career at Shelbourne before a move to Celtic. He was at Ross County with Adams last season, but made the trek down to Devon, where he has instantly become a fans favourite, and could well play high up in the Football League one day.

He has eleven goals and eleven assists to his name, and is the Devon's side top scorer.
