Almost a quarter of the way through, the 2019/20 season the January transfer window is already starting to come into conversation.

Leeds have started the season well, currently occupying a place in the play-offs, with the expectations of improving on last season the club may well look at the January transfer window as an opportunity to give themselves a boost.

Last January the club came unbelievably close to signing the Welsh winger Dan James who, this summer made the move to Manchester United for £15m.

The deal for James went down to the wire on deadline day last January, and after missing out on a deal, Leeds fell away during the latter stages of the season leaving fans thinking 'what could have been' had the winger made the move to Elland Road.

Marcelo Bielsa famously likes a small squad and likes players who have the ability to play a number of positions, take Stuart Dallas for example, a player Bielsa has credited for being the "complete player".

Injuries have already taken their toll on the current squad and the potential need for a boost of quality in January may be key for the Whites, here are THREE players who could bolster the Leeds team in the winter window...

Daniel Johnson

The energetic, tenacious midfielder would fit into Bielsa's midfield perfectly if the Argentinian and Victor Orta decide they need to improve the heart of the midfield.

Johnson, who currently plays for Preston, has been a major player for Alex Neil this season helping the club to third in the league, scoring seven goals from ten league appearances.

Goals from midfield is something that Leeds have lacked this season, it would also take off some of the pressure off Bamford and Nketiah's shoulders.

Callum O'Dowda

The winger was previously a target for Leeds but the Irishman's valuation put a on hold Bielsa's pursuit of the tricky winger.

The former Oxford United man has attracted a lot of interest and a move up to Yorkshire could materialise in January if Leeds want to bolster their team for a serious push for automatic promotion.

O'Dowda could be an even more attractive option for Leeds if Harrison's final third contributions don't improve to a more successful level.

Dwight Gayle

Like a broken record, any Championship club would be desperate to pick up Gayle in January if the opportunity arose.

Gayle was kept in the Premier League by Steve Bruce with the expectation of the striker getting game time in the top flight. However, Gayle hasn't had any chances yet and may be looking for another loan spell in the Championship or even a permanent move away when the window re-opens.

Leeds, with two very good options already at the club in Patrick Bamford and Eddie Nketiah, may not see it necessary to bring in another striker, but if chances continue to go begging a player like Gayle with his instincts in and around the penalty area could be too good an opportunity to miss and he could finally fire Leeds to the Premier League.
