Sunderland are on the lookout for a new manager following Phil Parkinson's dismissal last week.

There weren't many fans sad to see the 53-year-old go, as not only were results poor, with the Black Cats outside the play-off places in League One, but the style of play wasn't great either.

One man who may improve the latter is Lee Johnson. The former Bristol City man is out of work since departing Ashton Gate, and Football Insider described him as a 'leading contender' for the vacancy on Wearside.

Given his pedigree, it would appear to be a smart appointment on paper if Sunderland could finalise it, even if Johnson does have flaws. And, here we look at THREE players who would benefit if Johnson did succeed Parkinson at the Stadium of Light...

Dion Sanderson

Bringing the defender in was considered a coup for Sunderland at the time, but Sanderson has barely featured since.

A switch to a back four may help him get the right-back spot, whilst his pace gives him an advantage over others for that role if Johnson wanted to play with a higher line, which would be likely.

Sunderland quiz: Are these 10 facts about the Stadium of Light true or false?

Jack Diamond

The exciting winger starred for Harrogate as they memorably won promotion to the Football League last season, however he hasn't been given enough opportunities since.

The back three didn't suit him, and if Johnson wants to play with out-and-out wingers, he could turn to Diamond. With pace, quality and a hunger to do well, he really should be given chances to shine in League One.

Aiden McGeady

Not using McGeady was a major issue for Parkinson and it just didn't make sense.

He is undoubtedly one of the best players in the league on his day, so he should be someone that the team is built around. He will be key to a more attractive style of play, and would weigh in with goals and assists.
