This week saw the three man shortlist for the Championship player of the year announced, and little argument can be made that the three individuals deserved their recognition.

Brentford's Alan Judge, Burnley's Andre Gray and Ross McCormack of Fulham are the three stand-out players in with a shot at the award, whose recent recipients include Patrick Bamford and Danny Ings.

But despite the justified praise received by Gray, Judge and Mccormack there are some players who will feel aggrieved that they haven't been given the rightful recognition they are deserving of.

Middlesbrough are without a shortlisted player as are fellow promotion chasers Brighton, Hull and Derby. But which players will claim they are the Championship's best player.....

Abel Hernandez

The Uruguayan marksman is Hull's top scorer this season with 18 goals in all competitions. Hull have been in and around the play-off's since the opening weekend of the season with sixth in the table the lowest they've been.

He became Hull's record signing when he moved from Palermo in 2014 for £10 million. But despite the optimism around his purchase, the Tigers were relegated in his first season meaning he would have to apply his trade in England's second tier.

Rather than throwing his toys out of the pram, Hernandez has shown ample professionalism in helping his side bounce straight back to the top flight.

Automatic promotion is not out of the question but the play-off's look more likely and Steve Bruce will hope his number 9 can prove the difference.

Adam Clayton

The Lancashire born Clayton may not be operating in the traditional glory position of centre forward, but his importance to Middlesbrough is just as integral.

His 43 appearances this season are bettered only by Stewart Downing.

Despie chipping in with just one goal his defensive midfield partnership with Grant Leadbitter has been pivotal in their promotion push.

His hard tackling attitude is complimented by his ability on the ball.

Not only does he protect his back four and snuff out potential attacks, he is able just as capable of beginning the offensive charge with the likes of Downing, Adamoah and Rhodes in front of him.

He suffered play-off final heartbreak with the Tynesiders back in May but it looks like he could be set to take on his boyhood club Manchester City next season, if Middlesbrough are to pull through this season and return to the Premier League.

Fernando Forestieri

Fernando Forestieri3

The Italian playmaker has been a big part of what Sheffield Wednesday have achieved this season at Hillsborough.

With the Owls occupying the final play-off spot they owe much to the creative efforts of Forestieri.

He moved from Watford in the summer for an undisclosed fee after helping the Hornets achieve promotion to the big time just 12 months previously.

He has top scored for Wednesday this season with 14 goals.

Their promotion charge is late in blossoming with them taking their place in the play-off's for the first time in mid January after a win against local rivals Leeds.

They have not looked back since and if they can fend off the challenge of Cardiff City can look forward to a crack at the Premier League.

Forestieri will be pivotal in helping provide the attacking prowess to team mate Gary Hooper, whom he will be assisting in looking to get Wednesday to Wembley and hopefully a return to the promised land.
