Last season saw Colchester miss out on a League Two playoff spot by a single point, finishing in seventh place.
In a promotion race that went down to the wire, the U’s travelled to already champions Lincoln City knowing only a win would help the club reach the playoffs.
All went to plan as Colchester were closing the game with a comfortable 3-0 score and sixth place Newport County losing at Morecambe. But with only minutes to spare in the game, Newport dramatically snatched an equaliser in the 87th-minute of their game pipping the U’s to that seventh spot finish.
Now the U’s once again aim to claim a promotion spot after last season’s disappointment and have so far shown glimpses of what’s to come.
Although they had a slow start to their season, they have now only lost one of their last eight games which includes that dramatic penalty shoot-out win against Premier League side Crystal Palace.
As they hope to avoid missing out on promotion once again, we look at the three key players we think will make their promotion ambitions a reality:
The central defender has played in every game so far this season picking up two goals in the progress.
With an average of eight aerial duels won a game the 27-year-old is a key player in clearing the box and driving Colchester forward from the back.
His well established postion in the heart of their defence makes him a vital player if they are going to push for promotion this season. He knows his backline well and is not afraid to get stuck in at both ends of the pitch.
Senior’s style of play draws out fouls in dangerous positions and can drive forward on the wing on the counter attack.
Not only is he vital going forward but his defensive contribution gives aid to Colchester backline.
With a pass success of 83% it is only a matter of time before his assists and goals improve on the one apiece they currently stand at, the 22-year-old still has plenty of fire in his locker and should not be underestimated.
Nouble has starred in every league game so far for the U’s earning himself two goals and assists in the process.
The impressive attacking midfielder impressed massively against Swindon Town along-side new striking partner Theo Robinson, a duo that if consistent could have a massive effect on Colchester’s chances of promotion this season.
Nouble’s ability to win the ball in the air from midfield helps push Colchester forward at key moments and the 27-year old was often in the right place at the right time last season to thread through key passes that ultimately helped them win the important games.
