With Middlesbrough moving into a new dawn with Jonathan Woodgate as their manager, it will very intriguing to see just what the 39-year-old can achieve next season at the Riverside Stadium.

Whereas the Smoggies will fancy their chances in the Championship having finished in the top-seven for the past two campaigns, any sustained push for promotion may depend on the standard of their recruitment this summer.

By bringing in several quality additions during the transfer window, Woodgate will undoubtedly be building the foundations needed for success yet he also has to be wary about the dangers that overspending could cause for Boro in the future.

Keeping this in mind, here are three players who we think the new Smoggies boss should be eyeing up...

Dwight Gayle

Utterly outstanding at West Bromwich Albion during the 2018/19 campaign, Dwight Gayle once again proved why he is a force to be reckoned with at Championship level by rattling in 24 goals in 41 appearances.

Yet despite delivering a plethora of superb performances for the Baggies, the fact that they are not willing to bring the forward in on a permanent deal means that suddenly his future is very unclear.

With Newcastle United keen to see Gayle depart from St James' Park, Boro must consider making a move for the 29-year-old as he could quite easily supply the firepower needed to take the club to new heights next season.

Rekeem Harper

A prodigious talent, Rekeem Harper undoubtedly has the ability to become a quality operator over the coming years yet he may have to move away from West Brom in order to fulfil his potential.

Whereas he did manage to make 23 appearances for the Baggies in all competitions last season, the 19-year-old was left frustrated by a lack of involvement in the play-offs and is scheduled to become a free agent this summer (via Transfermarkt) after failing to agree a new deal with the club.

Although Boro would have to pay a compensatory fee for Harper due to his age, it may be worth taking a risk on him as he could help fill the void left by fellow winger Stewart Downing who was let go by the club last month.

Mohamed Diame

Available on a free transfer this summer following his release by Newcastle United, Mohamed Diame could turn out to be the perfect replacement for Muhamed Besic whose loan deal with Boro came to an end in May.

A powerhouse of a central midfielder, the Senegalese international was fantastic at times for the Magpies last season and therefore should have no troubles at Championship level, especially given his wealth of experience in this particular division.

Capable of playing in a deeper role as well just behind the strikers, Diame's versatility could be hugely beneficial for the Smoggies as they would be able to build several different formations based around the 31-year-old's strengths.
