Last year was a tale of so close but so far, for Sheffield Wednesday, the club did so well to secure a play-off place - but froze when it truly mattered.

Carlos Carvalhal's men had an unbelievable following throughout the campaign, which was emulate with the teams performance on the pitch.

It was a marvellous campaign for all around the club, and with the core of the side still at the club - why can't they do it again and go one step further this season?

Fernando Forestieri and Gary Hooper - they were arguably the best attacking duo in the Sky Bet Championship last season, 28 league goals between them - still at the club.

Kieren Westwood, only conceded 27 goals in 34 league matches last season, exemplary record for a fantastic keeper - still at the club. Midfield stalwarts like Barry Bannan and Sam Hutchinson; you guessed it, still at the club.

Although all of these players are still in Owls' shirts - the squad does need revitalising to combat a bad run following the disappointment that occurred at the end of the last campaign, some loan players could definitely be great to ensure that competition for places is at a premium and the squad is fresh going into the new campaign.

In this article, Football League World writer Jack Sharp looks at THREE players that Sheffield Wednesday should bring in on loan before they kick off against Aston Villa next week.....

Joe Riley

Even there there is no recognised left back currently in the Wednesday squad, this wouldn't just be a way of filling a position - Riley would just be an outstanding acquisition for The Owls'.

Riley is part of Warren Joyce's academy at United, however the 19-year-old has represented United in the FA Cup and Europa League, as well as being part of the match-day squad for a Premier League game.

Although Daniel Pudil (a left-back) is rumoured to be joining Wednesday after a loan spell at the club last season, I still believe there is definitely a place in Carvalhal's squad for Riley - who is unlikely to get any first team opportunities at Old Trafford.

Serge Gnabry

Wednesday are in current need of a winger, with a shortage of them at the club and some of the ones they already have perhaps not delivering.

That is why starlet Serge Gnabry could be a very good signing for Wednesday. The Arsenal and German U21 talent has been at The Gunners' since 2011, however has only made 18 appearances for the senior side.

Most of the playing time that Gnabry has had since joining the club has come from youth team football - he did have a brief and unsuccessful loan spell at West Brom last campaign.

His loan spell at West Brom could have dampened the reputation of the 21-year-old, however it is undoubtable that he possesses talent - with first team opportunities at an absolute premium at Arsenal and Wednesday needing a winger, this could definitely be a move that'd work for all.

Reece Burke

Sheffield Wednesday are a team which currently don't have a shortage of centre backs - however manager Carlos Carvalhal has given two of them the green light to leave the club.

Seemingly, these players would need replacing, and 19-year-0ld West Ham and England U20's player Reece Burke could definitely be the player to add depth to the squad.

Burke made 36 appearances last season for a Bradford side that made the Sky Bet League One play-offs - Burke was so instrumental to last seasons success that he won Bradford's Player of the Year award, which is highly impressive considering his age.

With the excess amount of defenders that West Ham possess - Burke may find first team opportunities hard to come by at the Olympic Stadium next term; a move to Wednesday could be the best thing for his development, whilst also aiding The Owls' promotion push.

So... Wednesday fans, what do you think of these suggestions? Would these signings improve your squad?
