Sheffield Wednesday look to be putting a difficult few years behind them as they look to maintain their place in the Championship playoff places this season.

Jos Luhukay's men are unbeaten in four league games and sit in 6th place in the Championship after five wins, four draws and three defeats from their first twelve league games.

There is a long way to go of course, but the Owls look like a solid outfit, and Luhukay will undoubtedly be looking to build a run of wins after the international break.

It's been a tricky last few years for the Yorkshire club - they were defeated by Hull City in the 15/16 playoff final and have been on a downward spiral ever since.

As we rewind the clocks, here, we take a look at three players Wednesday let go off far too early...

Clare was tipped to be the next big thing at Hillsborough after a very impressive loan spell at Gillingham last season, and was included in the first team upon his return from his spell at Priestfield.

But the 22-year old, who put in a string of impressive performances for the Owls last term, was sold to Scottish Premier League side for a six-figure fee at the end of last season, much to the dismay of Wednesday fans.

He could have been a really special player at Hillsborough.

Another young player who was let go far too early was George Hurst.

The England under-20 star was scoring goals for fun in the Three Lions' youth setup as well as the Owls' youth team, however was seemingly never given a chance by former Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal and current boss Luhukay.

After being linked with moves to both Manchester United and Leicester City, Hirst was then sold to Belgian side OH Leuven, managed by former Leicester and Derby manager Nigel Pearson - it really is a case of "the one that got away" here.

Going back a few years here, Owls fans will still be furious that they let go of Michail Antonio for a fee of only £1.5million to Nottingham Forest back in 2014.

After signing on a free transfer from Colchester United, Antonio was influential in the Owls' promotion from League One, but their talismanic winger signed for Forest before being a standout player at the City Ground.

The 28-year old, after 19 times in over 50 starts for the Reds, departed the East Midlands club for West Ham United, and although he may be plagued with injuries currently, many Owls fans will be wondering what would have happened if they had kept him at the club.
