It's been a turbulent season for Scunthorpe after sacking manager Nick Daws early and appointing Stuart McCall, but in the main, the former Bradford man has arrested the slide.

The early season form for the Irons was appalling, not least in their humbling home defeat against Fleetwood Town. There was little room for the manager to manoeuvre after that and his short tenure was swiftly brought to a conclusion.

Since then there's been improvement, albeit slow and cautious. Last season's play-off candidates have dropped off the pace but having lost key players in the summer, it isn't surprising.

Whilst the ship has been steadied, McCall will have one eye on January both in expectation of new faces, but also bids for his players. If he finds that he loses attacking midfielder Josh Morris to a Championship club, it might mean he has to quickly find a replacement.

In that situation, FLW thinks the following players might be worth a look at...

McCartan is on loan at local rivals Lincoln right now, but Bradford could recall him in the window. If they do, he'd be a perfect replacement for Morris.

He's been playing just behind the centre forward, but can probe from deep and is much more of an attacking midfielder than a forward. If he is recalled he's sure to be keen on a move away from Valley Parade after a tough year there.

Doughty is red-hot for Swindon and would surely be ready to step back up to a level he's more comfortable with.

He's a former QPR player who has shown some flashes of individual brilliance in League Two this season and he's got to be one worth considering.

Mellis is a former Chelsea trainee who has cemented a place in the Mansfield first team under David Flitcroft.

He's a talented boy, breaking from deep, but also enjoying arriving late in the box.

His Premier League upbringing ensures he has composure too - he'd be a great replacement for Morris.
