It is shaping up to be a hugely eventful end to the season for Jose Gomes' Reading, who are continuing to fight for their lives towards the bottom end of the Sky Bet Championship table.

The Royals have certainly improved under the Portuguese boss since he arrived in late December, but still find themselves sitting just one point above the relegation zone with just six games left to play this term.

The Berkshire club still have some tough tests to come, with trips to the likes of Norwich City, Middlesbrough and Bristol City fast approaching, but they have shown signs of promise under Gomes, and if they avoid the drop this season, they definitely have a platform to kick on next term.

Plenty of players have flourished under Gomes' management, with some putting themselves in the shop window ahead of the summer, and one player who the club will face a tough task of keeping at the Madejski Stadium beyond this season is John Swift.

The 23-year old has been a standout performer for Reading this season, scoring four goals and producing three assists for the club he has played over 100 times for since signing from Brentford in 2016.

Reports have surfaced though, claiming that Leeds United are weighing up a £7million move for the playmaker ahead of a potential summer move, which is a lot of money for a club fighting relegation in the Championship.

If Swift does leave for Elland Road, we take a look at three players Gomes should sign with the potential money...

Sammie Szmodics

If Swift does leave for Leeds, then there would be a need to replace the playmaker in the summer.

Szmodics could be a perfect signing for Reading - the attacking midfielder has scored 12 goals and produced four assists for League Two outfit Colchester United this season, and has caught the eye of plenty of high-profile clubs.

Derby County and Bristol City have already been linked with the playmaker, and although the 23-year old may be slightly more attack-minded than Swift, he could prove to be an excellent signing for the Royals.

Nelson Oliveira

Technically, Oliveira may not even cost a penny if Reading wish to sign him permanently in the summer, with his contract at Norwich City set to expire at the end of the season.

But if Swift is sold, then the funds would be beneficial in helping the club afford the striker's wage demands, and they should do everything to keep him at the Madejski Stadium beyond this campaign if it's possible.

The 27-year old has been hugely impressive for the Royals since his switch from Carrow Road, scoring three goals in seven appearances for Jose Gomes' men.

Gomes gets the best out of Oliveira, and the latter has proven before that with a full season under his belt, he can be one of the most clinical forwards in the league.

Grant Hanley

Reading's defence certainly needs bolstering in the summer, especially if they are unable to tie Matt Miazga down to a permanent deal.

Grant Hanley could be an excellent addition for the Royals - the towering centre-half has made just eight league appearances for Norwich this season, having fallen behind the likes of Ben Godfrey and Christoph Zimmermann in the pecking order at Carrow Road.

The 27-year old is an accomplished defender in the Championship who could also do a job in the Premier League, and if he is available for a cut-price in the summer, then Gomes should definitely look to sign him.
