After a dismal decline which saw Pompey fall from grace all the way to League Two, they are finally in with a shout of making their way back up the tough ladder of the Football League.

Portsmouth sit fifth in League Two and are seven points off of the automatic promotion places.

The former Premier League side have the joint best defensive record in the league along with Oxford, and have no trouble banging in the goals with 44 scored this season.

The likes of Conor Chaplin and Marc McNulty have performed well this season and both are close to double figures for the campaign.

Pompey lost 1-0 to fellow promotion contenders Oxford United last time out thanks to Oxford's new signing Jordan Bowery, who dropped from the Championship to play for the U's.

There are some strong contenders for promotion this season and Portsmouth will have to finalise business to keep up with their rivals.

Caolan Lavery

Caolan Lavery

The striker joined Portsmouth on loan at the beginning of the season, and has since scored four goals in thirteen appearances.

The Canadian striker's Wednesday contract is up at the end of the season, and Portsmouth will likely be interested in taking the player on a permanent deal.

With Matt Tubbs set to leave the club, with AFC Wimbledon interested, manager Paul Cook will want to bring someone in to replace Tubbs, and Lavery on a permanent deal would be good business for the club.

Michael Smith

Michael Smith873222

The Swindon forward has been out-of- favour at the club this season. and has been on loan to Barnsley after getting little game time for Town.

The 24-year-old will be looking to leave the club and Portsmouth could well snap him up for a lower fee than he is worth.

He has scored 21 goals for Swindon in 64 appearances and could well prove lethal in a lower league.

At the age of 24, Smith still has a large part of his playing career left, and he could flourish under the stewardship of Paul Cook at Fratton Park.

Omar Beckles

The Non-league defender has been on hot form for Aldershot Town this season and looks set to make the move into the Football League sooner rather than later.

The 23-year-old has made 27 appearances for Aldershot this season, and the former Millwall trainee has been linked with Port Vale as well as Portsmouth.

It is a risky signing to make as Beckles may struggle in a higher league, but if Cook were to sign the centre-back up then he could prove to be a huge bargain.
