Plymouth Argyle are currently second place in League Two, eight points behind leaders Northampton.

Whilst they have gone through a sticky spell since the turn of the year, they look as if they have come out the other side following a convincing 3-0 victory over play-off challengers Mansfield.

And whilst the Cobblers' amazing form has widened the gap, they still have a ten point cushion over fourth place Accrington.

Argyle, like many teams in the lower leagues, have a high turnover of playing staff.

At the end of each season, a relatively large handful of players don't have their contract renewed, and the manager looks for new talent.

Whilst this means they have little to no dead wood in their side, it has left some of the Green Army wondering why the club are getting rid of some of their best players.

So, in the opinion of FootballLeagueWorld writer Ryan Evans, here are THREE Argyle players that they will regret letting go of.....

Lewis Alessandra

The striker was definitely a favourite at Home Park; his work rate was exceptional and had an eye for goal that made him, along with strike partner Reuben Reid, one of the most deadly strike duos in League Two last season. However, at the end of the campaign when his contract expired, he moved on to League One side Rochdale.

Scoring 12 and 13 goals respectively in his two years on the South Coast, Alessandra popped up at some vital moments for the Pilgrims and seemed at home ever since John Sheridan chose to play him up front alongside side Reid, after starting his career as a midfielder.

Alessandra's abilities complemented those of Reid perfectly. The Greater Manchester-born man was what is now known as a Jamie Vardy-like player; energetic, an extremely high work-rate and a natural eye for goal. He combined with Reid; who held the ball up well, brought other players into the attack and slotted the ball home on many an occasion.

Whilst all the plaudits for Plymouth getting into the play-offs last season went to Reid, Alessandra was definitely the unsung hero of that side and they miss him this season.

Their attack is no where near as strong, with Reid not looking half the player he has in his last two seasons at Home Park.

Ryan Brunt, Graham Carey and Jake Jervis have all come into the side and looked good, but, with Argyle's sometimes problematic season in front of goal, Derek Adams definitely would like to take the 27-year old back.

Maxime Blanchard

Maxime Blanchard

The Frenchman spent three years in Plymouth, and made an astonishing 124 league appearances. Considered a force to be reckoned with, he saved Argyle's football league status on more than one occasion during a subdued spell for the club.

Blanchard left Home Park in 2014 after his contract was not renewed, but it didn't take long for him to find a new club, with Ireland's Shamrock Rovers signing him on for the 2015 season, where he played 37 times as the Hoops finished third in the League of Ireland.

Many Argyle fans were left scratching their heads over the decision to let the centre-back go, whose partnership with Darren Purse was exceptional. However, with the likes of Curtis Nelson, soon to be club captain, breaking through, Sheridan took the decision of changing the guard.

Whilst letting Nelson establish himself was an incredible decision, was there really any need to tell the 29-year old his career at the Pilgrims was over?

With Argyle going through a shaky spell right now in their current Sky Bet League Two campaign, they could do with a man of his experience to lead them through. They haven't been looking at the possibility of winning a league title for a long time, and the pressure may of got to the club.

Jason Banton

Jason Banton

A product of the Arsenal youth academy and a former Liverpool, Leicester and Crystal Palace senior player, Banton has made four appearances for the England Under 17 side back in 2008.

During his initial loan spell at the club in 2013, Banton scored six League Two goals in his 14 appearances and won League Two Player of the Month once as well.

Banton returned to Palace before going back out on loan to MK Dons, where he didn't quite have as much success as with the Pilgrims.

He returned to Home Park permanently in January 2014, where he spent 18 months at the club, before his contract was let run too. His energetic style of play was a joy to watch. Banton was a well-rounded attacking midfielder - able to pass the ball, break away turning defence into attack, and had a good strike on him too.

The moment that most Argyle fans will remember him for, however, was scoring Argyle's second as they came back from 3-0 down to go into their play-off semi-final second leg just 3-2 down on aggregate to Wycombe at the end of last season.

Whilst Argyle were to lose that game 5-3 on aggregate, Banton impressed Gareth Ainsworth enough for him to sign the Englishman permanently that summer.

Banton struggled to get first team opportunities, playing just five games and scoring just once. He had a loan spell at struggling Hartlepool, before Notts County decided to sign him earlier this year.
