Millwall have had a terrible start to the season in the Championship, winning just two fixtures.

Neil Harris’ men were one of the surprise packages of the previous season, but for one reason or another, they have failed to replicate said form this time round.

Despite this, Millwall defeated a disarrayed Aston Villa side in their last game. Goals from Shane Ferguson and Tom Elliot saw off Aston Villa.

That victory saw Millwall climb out of the relegation spots, and now they sit in 20th in the Championship, but it is a poor start nevertheless.

The question that many will ask is why the surprise package of last season have taken a downward trajectory to become a relegation candidate.

One reason for this may be the sale of key players, which means Millwall’s squad is nowhere near as strong as last season, with Harris unable to spend big cash in the window.

George Saville was allowed to depart for Middlesbrough in the summer. Without much doubt, he was Millwall’s most important man last season, so his departure will have hurt the squad.

Even though they got a decent fee for the Northern Ireland international, how can they move forward if they sell their best players?

Harry Toffolo failed at Norwich and then didn’t really make much of an impression at Millwall, so moved on to League Two promotion chasers Lincoln City.

The left-back is clearly ‘one for the future’ and some Millwall supporters may feel letting him go on a permanent rather than a loan was the wrong choice.
