Derby County currently sit second in the Championship table and continue to invest heavily in the squad, as they look to keep on the coat tails of Middlesbrough at the top of the league.

Although they have invested in the squad, with the additions of Nick Blackman and Abdoul Camara already in January, there will always be a time when it may well be worth cutting losses or cashing in on certain players.

Derby are taking a big gamble by throwing money at the league and handing it to a manager in his first job in management, but so far it seems to be just about working.

It may well be that if certain bids come in for some of their fringe players, or even some of the higher earners, they are tempted to sell to keep the books relatively balanced.

In this article, I detail THREE players Derby could potentially cash on this January......

Darren Bent

The former England striker will no doubt be on a sizeable wage since joining from Aston Villa, and Derby may be wise to offload the front man, especially with the signings of Blackman and Camara.

Bent has struggled for regular starts under Paul Clement and has only scored two goals all season.

There is no doubting the qualities of man who once commanded £18m and £24m transfer fees, but should the right bid come in; the Rams board may well think it wise to sell now.

Will Hughes

The young midfielder is no doubt one of the biggest talents outside of the Premier League, and was courted by many clubs last season.

Hughes though, damaged his anterior cruciate ligaments on the opening day of the season, and has been out ever since.

There is many an occasion when players never return from injury the same player they were prior to it happening, and this may well be the case with Hughes.

Premier League clubs retain an interest in England under 21 international, and if substantial bid was to come in, Paul Clement could well be tempted to part ways.

Andreas Weimann

Despite only arriving in the summer, and seemingly being a first team regular, Weimann didn’t start the tie against top of the table Middlesbrough, and was also left out in favour of new signing Nick Blackman against Reading last night.

He does however possess real quality, although it hasn’t shown in his goal return so far.

Derby paid a reported fee of just under £3m for the ex-Villa wide man, and should a similar bid come to their door during the window, they may well be tempted to cut their losses and move on without Weimann.
