Barnsley will take to the field in only a matter of weeks to kick off their campaign in the Championship, something which seemed nigh on impossible just 9 months ago.

The Reds were struggling in League One before the turn of the year, as Paul Heckingbottom took over from the departing Lee Johnson as the new year ushered in.

What happened next was remarkable, as Heckingbottom and his squad pulled themselves from the bottom with 10 wins from 12, and also put together a run to the JPT final, which they duly won.

They secured a playoff spot with a final day hammering of Wigan, and went on to defeat both Walsall and then Millwall at Wembley to secure a place back in the second tier.

The Tykes have a good little squad full of spirit, but the management team are under no illusions more players will need to be added to sustain the momentum for next season.

Here, FLW writer Lee Connor looks at THREE players Barnsley should look to bring in on loan before their opening game...

Lloyd Isgrove

The little winger was instrumental last season for Barnsley as he spent time on loan at Oakwell following a move from Southampton.

He rounded his season off with a goal in the playoff final against Millwall, and Reds fans would more than love to see Isgrove back in South Yorkshire.

If Southampton are willing to let him go, then another loan spell would go down very well for both Isgrove, and the Barnsley fans who were so impressed with him last term.

Mason Holgate

Another former Red off the production line, Holgate has yet to make an impression at Goodison Park following his move from Oakwell a couple of seasons ago.

However, Barnsley need cover and help in the central defensive positions should Alfie Mawson or Marc Roberts get injured, with Lewin Nyatanga considered past his best as back up.

Holgate could offer competition and ability across a few of the defensive positions, and manager Paul Heckingbottom might well have his eye on the former Tyke. He would most certainly be welcomed back, and a loan spell might serve both the club and the player well.

Harry Winks

Harry Winks

One area the Tykes are a bit light in is the central midfield area, where Conor Hourihane runs things when fit.

He missed parts of last season and it told, so bringing in a young hungry player from the Premier League like Winks could be an excellent piece of business.

Barnsley will have a good reputation for young players up and down the league following Ashley Fletchers impressive spell last time out, and with players like John Stones graduating from the academy, Oakwell is clearly a good place to be for young players.

Winks is highly thought of at White Hart Lane, but he needs to get some first team games under his belt if he is to progress as he is expected.

Barnsley fans, what do you think? Would you take these 3 players? Let us know your thoughts in the comments!
