The Championship season is now over two months old and the league table is starting to settle to give fans a good idea of how their club is progressing over the course of the season so far, and for Nottingham Forest fans there is a big division in opinion.

New manager Philippe Montanier has had a mixed start to life at the City Ground with the club currently lying in 15th place with 15 points, from their opening 12 matches but having only won one game in their last seven league games.

Rumours had circulated before Friday night's 3-1 win over high-flying Birmingham that Montanier's position had come under scrutiny but the pressure appears to have eased off slightly after the victory.

However, with a number of clubs including Aston Villa and Cardiff City choosing to already act and relieve their manager of their duties for under-performing, there is still speculation that Forest's impatient owners might take similar action if results do not pick up over the next few matches.

Football League World writer Steve Day looks at THREE perfect replacements for Montanier should the French gaffer be removed from the position by Forest chairman Fawaz Al-Hasawi.....

Nigel Pearson

Who else is there that is more suited to put at the top of a list like this than the former manager of two of Forest's biggest rivals in the form of Leicester City and Derby?

Yes, the fact Pearson even makes this list shows how highly-regarded he is within football.

The ex-Sheffield Wednesday bruising defender has been credited with putting the foundations in place for Leicester's meteoric rise from League One to Premier League champions, within the space of a few seasons, before he was unceremoniously sacked in 2015 as manager.

Pearson was hired as Derby boss this summer but was fired from his post after an alleged bust-up with Rams owner Mel Morris.

There is no denying Pearson is a hot-headed individual but if Forest's owners can stomach his blunt approach to management, then they could have quite the manager on their hands who has first hand experience of leading his sides to title-winning campaigns in the Football League.

Plus, what more motivation could Pearson need than wanting to get one over on his former clubs?

Roberto Di Matteo

It is sad to say and it is a summary of the fickle world of football but right now Di Matteo's stock as a club manager is plummeting.

He might well be a Champions League-winning boss but his early doors sacking by Aston Villa with the club in 20th place in the Championship with just one win from their first 12 matches, has seen his capabilities at a manager brought into question.

In order to rebuild a managerial career that clearly showed potential at MK Dons, Chelsea, West Brom, and Schalke 04, Di Matteo could well see a position at a club of the potential of Forest as the ideal opportunity.

Di Matteo is a manager with experience of managing in the Football League and even though his Villa side only tasted victory once this season, they still only suffered 4 defeats in their first 12 games of the season so he knows how to set his teams up to be hard to beat.

That mentality is arguably a characteristic that Forest need right now if they are to take the first step towards a long-term recovery, to being one of English football's great top flight clubs once again.

Malky Mackay

mackay

The former Cardiff City and Wigan manager has had differing experiences during his management career so far, but the highs he has reached in the past have far outweighed the lows with a Championship title-winning campaign as Bluebirds boss the highlight of his career so far.

Mackay was first given a crack at management at Watford where, with Sean Dyche as his assistant manager, they steadied a rocky Hornets shift to prevent the club from sinking into the third tier of English football.

His achievements at Watford were then noticed by Cardiff who moved to sign the Scotsman in 2011.

It was here that he enjoyed huge success with the promotion campaign and guiding the club to the 2012 Capital One Cup Final, where they narrowly lost to Liverpool on penalties.

After a controversial and messy departure from Cardiff, Mackay was hired by Wigan to try and save the club's Championship status.

Unfortunately, Mackay failed and the Latics dropped down into League One.

He is still regarded as one of the most exciting young managers in British football but still carries the reputation linked with the alleged racial and sexist comments he made in private when with the Bluebirds.

If Forest can look past that incident then they would have a very competent manager at the helm with experience of leading a team to the Premier League, and getting a group of players to fulfil their potential.
