Fulham have had plenty of big names in their squad in recent seasons, especially before relegation to the Sky Bet Championship from the Premier League in 2014.

Such players that come to mind are former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov, or United States of America international Clint Dempsey.

However every club has those sort of personnel who never quite reach their potential, those who perhaps are let down by their attitude or are just over-hyped in the first place after one or two good performances.

One player who just missed being featured in this article is current Fulham forward Matt Smith, failing to deliver his potential after a move from fellow Championship side Leeds United on the 2014 summer transfer deadline day.

Here are my THREE Fulham players, past and present, who have been over-hyped and never quite made it to the highest level of the Premier League and Europe......

Kerim Frei

Kerim Frei is definitely a player the Fulham faithful have probably forgotten about all completely.

The 22- year-old appeared on the scene in the Cottagers' Europa League qualifying campaign in 2011, coming on as a substitute to replace forward Andrew Johnson.

Even Academy Director Huw Jennings is on record to say the then 17-year-old had a future, with no lack of confidence and was of 'first-team quality'.

He made his competitive debut in English football in a League Cup third round tie against Chelsea. Then a few months later played his first game in the Premier League against Swansea City.

In October 2012 Frei moved to Cardiff City on-loan before being recalled by the Craven Cottage club 3 appearances after.

With rumours suggesting he wasn't settled in this country, the former Switzerland youth international joined Turkish club Beşiktaş on a five-year deal in September 2013.

Kerim Frei played 23 games for Fulham before his move.

Konstantinos Mitroglou

Kostas Mitroglou

The Greece international moved to Fulham on the January transfer deadline day in 2014. Although it took three weeks later for him to make his debut for the London club.

At the time, Mitroglou broke Fulham's transfer record, and was expected to be the saviour to keep the Cottagers in the Premier League.

However due to consistent injury problems and fitness issues, the striker was restricted to just three appearances before the club's relegation to the Championship at the end of the 2013/14 season.

With the 28-year-old's high wages, Fulham were keen to offload Konstantinos Mitroglou on loan in the hope they would instantly return to the top-flight.

That didn't happen, and after loan spells with Greek side Olympiacos and Benfica from Portugal the forward was out-of-favour at Craven Cottage. He signed a permanent deal at Benfica during the summer, signing until 2020.

As a result, Mitroglou never really quite made it to the player Fulham fans were hoping.

Bryan Ruiz

Bryan Ruiz

This is a player that supporters will remember.

Bryan Ruiz joined Fulham in the summer of 2011 from Dutch outfit FC Twente for an undisclosed fee.

In a fixture against Bolton Wanderers in 2012, the attacking midfielder broke a bone in his foot which resulted in him being on the sidelines for ten weeks.

Ruiz's most successful season during his four year spell at Craven Cottage came in the 2012/13 campaign, where he made 31 appearances and made five assists.

After falling down the pecking order due to injuries and other issues, the Costa Rica international was forced out of Fulham by moving to PSV on-loan.

The 31-year-old currently plays for Sporting Lisbon in Portugal after signing a three-year contract with the club in July 2015.

After the high expectations of Bryan Ruiz when he moved to London five years ago, I'm sure many Fulham fans will argue that the midfielder was over-hyped and failed to become the player once thought of him.
