If you're a Birmingham City supporter, the chances are you'll be delighted with how your side has started their current Championship campaign.

Whilst early promotion favourites Derby County and Aston Villa struggling, Birmingham City have started with a real spring in their step.

As he always seems to do, Gary Rowett has instilled a sense of real confidence in his side and they sit in fifth after the opening eight fixtures.

They've got a seriously balanced squad and whilst they might lack the spending power possessed by others in the division, they're playing with real confidence.

It's a far-cry from some of the performances we've seen from past Birmingham City players, with their recent history being plagued by ownership problems away from the pitch which hasn't helped matters on it.

And there are certain Birmingham players that have been classed as seriously overrated as the years have gone on.

So with that in mind, we're going to open the vault and have a look at THREE over-hyped Birmingham players that never quite made it.....

Jesper Gronkjaer

So much was expected of Jesper Gronkjaer when he joined the club for £3 million back in 2004, after lighting up the Premier League with some absolute screamers for Chelsea.

But the reality was actually very different when he arrived and he showed little of the promising form he'd shown in the top flight.

He was lazy, defensively weak and his crosses were better left untouched.

He's often branded as one of the most overrated players Blues have ever signed, despite the expectation levels when he made the transfer.

He lasted one season at St Andrews before pretty uninspiring spells in Spain and Germany. He now plays semi-professionally back in his native Denmark. Ouch.

David Bentley

To say David Bentley didn't make it is an absolute understatement - he now doesn't even play professional football.

He's now sunning himself as a restaurant owner in Marbella after retiring at just 29-years-old.

He was once earmarked as once of the most promising young English players in the country but a severe lack of work ethic blighted him during his spell with Blues.

He wasn't a team player and he spent more time with his hands on his hips than anything else.

Not good enough and severely overrated. That's why he's no longer playing football.

Rowan Vine

Nothing says panic buy more than the addition of Rowan Vine to the Birmingham City squad back in 2007. Signed for £3million, Vine scored three times against the Blues that season before making the move to St Andrews from Luton Town and he was awful.

He never looked the part in Royal Blue and scored just twice in seventeen appearances.

He was often played out wide on the wing and it came blindingly clear very quickly that Steve Bruce had made a mistake.

A succession of loan spells came and went and he's now playing in non-league football. Another one whom so much was expected of, but so little delivered.
