3 out-of-contract players Middlesbrough should target this summer to enhance their squad

Middlesbrough still have something to play for this season as we go into the final fixtures this weekend.

They go into this weekend seventh in the league meaning they sit one place out of the play-off spots.

However, if they can get a win against Preston North End this weekend and either Luton Town or Sheffield United slip up, they can still make the play-offs and try to get promotion to the Premier League.

Regardless of whether Middlesbrough find themselves in the Premier League or Championship next season, it will be sure that Chris Wilder will want to make additions to his squad so they can either compete at the top end of the Championship or retain their place in the top flight.

With that in mind, here we take a look at three out-of contract players Middlesbrough should look at targeting this summer.

Viktor Johansson

Johansson has been with Rotherham United this year and part of the squad that has achieved promotion up to the Championship.

This season Middlesbrough haven’t had a solid goalkeeper to trust in the position. They started the season with Joe Lumley in goal but he was dropped after a poor run of form.

Luke Daniels stepped up into his space but at 34-years-old, Wilder is probably more likely to want a younger goalkeeper to be able to rely on week on week.

The 23-year-old has done well at Rotherham this year keeping 11 clean sheets in 26 appearances and given the Millers have other goalkeepers such as Josh Vickers, who has only missed out on game time this season through injury, Johansson could be tempted to move to a bigger club for more regular game time.

This would depend on the league Middlesbrough are in next season as it may be too soon for him to step up to a Premier League club but this would be a solid Championship addition.

Michael Smith

Middlesbrough’s attacking threat is another area they need to develop this summer as they have struggled at the top end of the pitch this season.

Matt Crooks is their top goalscorer this season with 11 goals and behind him is Andraz Sporar with eight goals.

Michael Smith is part of the Rotherham United squad who have just achieved promotion to the Championship.

Although he is 30-years-old now, Smith has scored 18 goals in 45 appearances and has also been able to contribute six assists showing he definitely still has the quality.

Furthermore, Chris Wilder seemingly doesn’t mind having an older player in his ranks as long as they get the job done.

Tom Lawrence

This would be another signing that would address Boro’s goal scoring problems and provide Chris Wilder’s side with options up front.

Middlesbrough would benefit from multiple options in an attacking role as right now it seems one striker would not be enough.

Lawrence is out of contract with Derby County this summer, who have been relegated to League One and he has plenty of Championship experience.

This season he has got 11 goals which added to the goals from Crooks this season, makes an impact in the Boro side.
