Birmingham City have had a very disappointing season, with the side set to escape relegation due to the points deductions that rivals were hit with.

Such a poor campaign has prompted plenty of speculation surrounding Lee Bowyer's future, and it appears as though there's every chance he won't be in the dugout when the new season starts in August.

However, no matter who is in charge, it's clear that Blues need a squad overhaul, although that's going to be difficult given the financial position of the club.

Therefore, targeting free agents could be the way to go, and here we look at THREE players approaching the end of their deals that could improve Blues...

Alfie Mawson

The centre-back has been linked with a switch to St. Andrew's in the past and you would have to say he'd be a good addition.

Firstly, strengthening defence has to be a priority and Mawson would be an upgrade on what they have, whilst he will be desperate to get back playing after a frustrating few years with Fulham where he hasn't kicked on.

So, it could be the perfect match as Mawson looks to get his career back on track.

Erik Pieters

With Kristian Pedersen sure to leave in the summer, a new left-back will be required and Pieters could be the answer.

The experienced full-back's deal with Burnley is running down and the fact he hasn't been offered a new deal yet may suggest they've made their mind up.

With Charlie Taylor at the club, he won't ever be first-choice, so the prospect of moving to Blues where he can be a regular may appeal.

Ben Osborn

Another player who could improve the Blues squad is Sheffield United's Osborn.

The former Nottingham Forest man is capable at playing in various positions, so having someone like him over a 46-game period would be very welcome for any manager.

But, after failing to nail down a regular spot at Bramall Lane, he may want to look elsewhere and become a key player. There's every chance he could do that in this Blues midfield, where he would bring additional quality to the team.
