Nottingham Forest return to the home comforts of the City Ground this afternoon looking to try and heal the scars of last weekend’s derby-day horror show at Pride Park.

The Reds went down 2-0 to Derby County and after a somewhat lacklustre performance boss Mark Warburton will relish the chance to get back to winning ways on home soil.

Burton Albion arrive in Robin Hood country this afternoon and with former Forest favourite Nigel Clough in the dugout you can bet that the Reds will be in for a stern assessment.

Forest are not a million miles away from getting things right. Warburton’s style is based on keeping possession of the football and signs prior to the Derby game were that the Reds are becoming more accustomed to such a strategy.

If Forest can cut out the all too frequent soft goals going against them then it shouldn’t be too long before wins become more frequent for Warburton’s men.

With pretty much a full squad to choose from for the visit of Burton, Football League World writer Lee Clarke looks at three players who could come into contention for starting berths in today’s game.

Zach Clough

The former Bolton Wanderers man has started just three times for the Reds this season and after showing such promise at the back end of last season that statistic is somewhat surprising.

The 22-year-old struggles to have an impact on the game when he comes off the bench and Warburton might give Clough the chance to start in a familiar number ten role against Burton Albion.

Some of the criticism cast in the direction of Clough has been harsh to say the least and the Reds would be wise to hand the youngster a run in the side if the player is to fulfil his true potential.

Jamie Ward

During Forest’s recent poor form, the team has lacked a little bit of passion and that is one attribute that Ward possesses in bucket loads.

The ex-Derby man returned from injury in Sunday’s game against the Rams and after getting through half-an-hour off the bench he could be handed a starting spot against another of his former clubs today.

What Ward lacks in technical ability he more than makes up for in desire and with Forest desperate for a win that trait cannot be underestimated.

Ben Brereton

With Jason Cummings not having the best of games against Derby County, Warburton could look to mix up his attack and that could hand a reprieve to youngster Brereton.

The 18-year-old was a surprise exclusion from the squad at Pride Park which considering is quality is rather quite baffling.

The Forest boss has preferred to utilise Brereton on the right-wing during the 2017/18 campaign and it hasn’t suited the player at all, with a return to the Reds’ attack likely to be enforced at some point for the talented youngster.
