Newcastle United face a fight to maintain their Premier League status this season, with the club currently 18th in the standings, two points from safety.

Steve McClaren's side have won just five of their 18 league fixtures and have one of the weakest defensive records in the division, keeping just four clean sheets while conceding 41 goals.

The Magpies have reacted in this month's transfer window, spending big to strengthen in midfield with Swansea City's Jonjo Shelvey and Andros Townsend from Tottenham Hotspur both moving to St James's Park, as well as Henri Saivet coming in from the French league.

The new arrivals mean Newcastle will have a few players in the squad that are likely to be surplus to requirements for the rest of the season, so could move to the Championship to secure regular playing time.

Rolando Aarons

It would be no surprise to see Rolando Aarons heading out on loan for the rest of the season, especially after the side sealed a deal for Andros Townsend.

With the ex-Spurs man now at the club, Aarons, who recently returned from a four-month foot injury absence, seems destined to be playing elsewhere for the remainder of the campaign.

The 20-year-old was linked with a move away from the club in the summer too, with QPR thought to be keen on the England Under-20 international as a makeweight in a deal involving Charlie Austin, while Arsenal are also said to rate the youngster.

McClaren admitted last year that Aarons isn't ready for the Premier League, but he's been compared to the likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Wilfried Zaha, who made their names in League One and the Championship respectively before earning their chances in the top flight.

Mike Williamson

Defender Mike Williamson has already had a spell in the Championship this season, making five appearances with Wolverhampton Wanderers before returning to Newcastle in December.

The 32-year-old had been the subject of interest from Sheffield Wednesday earlier this month, but Wolves are said to be on the verge of signing Williamson on a permanent basis.

The defender impressed Kenny Jackett during his time at Molineux, while admitting that he enjoyed his time with the club, so a return seems inevitable.

Williamson has plenty of Championship experience, winning promotion to the Premier League with Newcastle in 2010, while also playing in the division with Watford earlier in his career.

Jamie Sterry

Promising young defender Jamie Sterry appeared to be on the verge of a first-team debut during Williamson's loan at Wolves earlier in the season, but the 20-year-old never made it off the bench.

Sterry signed a contract extension in the summer after excelling with the reserves last season, but a lack of senior experience could stop him breaking into McClaren's side.

The defender is also capable in midfield, admitting that he enjoys attacking as much as preventing goals, and identifying Barcelona's Dani Alves as the player he models himself after.

With Sol Bamba linked with a move to the club, Newcastle should have enough cover defensively to let Sterry head out on loan, setting him up for a greater role next season.
