North East neighbours Newcastle and Middlesbrough were famously relegated at the same time back in 2009, though the latter have been unable to claw their way out of the Championship ever since.

Well, until now perhaps. Just a point away from the Promised Land, there's every chance the Teeside outfit could either be joining or replacing their more illustrious neighbours in the Premier League next year.

Aitor Karanka's side are gearing up an absolutely vital visit of Brighton this weekend in a 90 min battle that will decide who joins Burnley in being automatically promoted.

While the Riverside club boast a team packed to the rafters with high levels of quality, there's no doubt they could use some reinforcement no matter what happens against the Seagulls.

Though the upwardly mobile Championship outfit are likely to have extensive scouting networks, they may be well advised to simply cast their glances over to St. James' Park in order to jump on the major overhaul likely to happen there.

Whether the Toon Army keep their heads above water or not, surely there will be major changes.

Siem De Jong

Things haven't worked out for the Dutchman ever since moving from Ajax in 2014, with a series of injuries derailing his progress on Tyneside.

Clearly a hugely talented attacker, the 27-year old would link up well with Jordan Rhodes and help keep possession ticking over, while creating chances for the aforementioned Scottish marksman.

An ambitious move, but could be the perfect replacement for Gaston Ramirez.

Yoan Gouffran

Yoan Gouffran has been frozen out of proceedings for the Magpies, but has certainly proved to be good value for money since joining from Bordeaux three years ago.

Recently converted to a central midfielder, the Frenchman has shown to be a considerable goal threat from wider areas when pushed up the field.

Would be excellent cover and competition for the likes of Stewart Downing and is noted for his intense work rate.

Tim Krul

Perhaps the most ambitious of the lot, but Tim Krul would be a welcome addition to the ranks on Teeside.

While current custodian Dimitrios Konstantopoulos has been in wonderful form this campaign, the Greek is nearing his 38th birthday and surely can't be a long term option.

With Karl Darlow and Rob Elliot both impressing in Krul's absence, perhaps the Dutchman will depart.
