Championship new boys Wigan Athletic start their campaign with a visit to Bristol City following their promotion last year.

Bristol City were in Wigan's shoes the year before after winning the League One title in 2014/15.

Bristol City will be looking to make Ashton Gate a fortress next season and a newly promoted team is almost ideal opponents to start the year with.

The Robins succeeded in staying afloat last year after flirting with relegation for much of the campaign. This year they will look to kick on. With new manager Lee Johnson at the helm and the owners willing to spend some money, it is an exciting time to be a Bristol City supporter.

A handful of new signings would really help to propel Bristol City as they want to be competing higher up the league next season. Getting business done early will be key though - preferably before the opening game of the season.

Here are THREE signings that could make their debut on the opening day.....

Gary O'Neil

Bristol City swooped early in the window to secure the services of free agent Gary O'Neil following his release from Norwich.

The central midfielder has a wealth of experience in the Premier League and the Championship.

He helped West Ham, QPR and Norwich all win promotion to the top flight via the play-offs in three successive years.

He brings a range of passing to the Bristol City midfield and should start the opening game against Wigan.

Lee Tomlin

The Bournemouth attacking midfielder was a key player for Bristol City last year during a loan spell with the Championship strugglers.

His impressive displays seem to have convinced the Robins to make a permanent move for the 27-year-old although no official bid has been lodged.

Tomlin, who can also play as a striker or a winger, provides some much-needed creativity in attacking areas for Bristol City. He scored 6 goals in 18 games whilst on loan last year.

Ashley Fletcher

Lee Johnson worked with Ashley Fletcher last season when the striker joined Barnsley on loan from Manchester United.

He had a very successful stint with the League One play-off winners including goals in the semi-final and the final of the play-offs.

He is now being hunted as a loan target by a number of Championship clubs but could look to reunite with his former manager.

If he does join, he could be set to start up front instead of or alongside Jonathan Kodjia.
