With the January transfer window set to open in just under two months' time, Birmingham City are reportedly eyeing up a move for Nahki Wells.

According to The Sun (as cited by HITC), the Blues are interested in signing the forward on a permanent deal from Burnley.

Currently on loan at Birmingham's Championship rivals Queens Park Rangers, Wells has made a fantastic start to the 2019/20 campaign at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

As well as scoring seven league goals for the Hoops, the 29-year-old has also provided two assists in the second-tier.

Whilst there is no doubting that Wells would boost Birmingham's attacking options, they could face competition from elsewhere for his signing if Burnley do indeed make him available for transfer.

Keeping this in mind, we have set out three alternatives to Wells that the Blues must consider making a move for if they miss out on the forward.

Check them out below...

One of the stand-out performers in League One this season, Ivan Toney has already scored 12 goals for Peterborough United.

Currently thriving under the guidance of Posh manager Darren Ferguson, the forward seemingly has all the ingredients needed to make the step up to the Championship.

As well as being lethal in the air, Toney also possesses a great deal of pace which is something that Birmingham have been missing since Che Adams' departure in the summer.

Whilst the Blues may have to spend big in order to sign the former Northampton Town man, it may be worth the risk.

Paddy Madden

Since joining Fleetwood Town last year, Paddy Madden has emerged as a key player for Joey Barton's side.

Having found the back of the net on 19 occasions during the previous campaign, the forward has taken his game to new heights in recent months by scoring 11 goals in all competitions for the Trawlermen.

If he can reproduce these performance levels in the Championship for Birmingham, he could end up playing a key role in helping the club achieve a top-six finish next May.

Rhian Brewster

A product of Liverpool's youth academy, Rhian Brewster created headlines in 2017 as he helped England win the Under-17 World Cup by scoring eight goals in the competition.

Whilst he has yet to make any major inroads on the Reds' starting eleven since this tournament, the forward has illustrated some real signs of promise for the club in Carabao Cup this season.

In order to continue to develop as a player, it may be beneficial for Brewster to leave Liverpool on a temporary basis in January.

Therefore, if he is made available for transfer, Birmingham should consider a move for the 19-year-old as he could end up taking the Championship by storm under the guidance of caretaker head coach Pep Clotet.
