After a poor start to the season, Jos Luhukay has steadied the Sheffield Wednesday ship somewhat as they marched up the league.

The Owls sit sixth in the division having won five of their first dozen matches, drawing on three occasions.

It has been an impressive turn around at Hillsborough after what was a summer of discomfort for the manager and the fans.

A transfer embargo had been placed on the club without broader knowledge and players were only added towards to the end of the transfer window, and into the extended loan window, too.

It was a turbulent summer for Wednesday, and they are coming out the other side of it.

There have been mistakes made from last season to now, and Luhukay will be hoping to avoid a repeat of many, if not all, as he looks to continue his side’s current run of good form.

With that said here are three mistakes Luhukay cannot afford to repeat at Sheffield Wednesday.

Jos Luhukay was picking a team full of household Championship names at the start of the season - and it wasn’t working.

Their form was poor, and their footballing understanding was nonexistent as Wednesday’s start to the campaign got off to an awful start.

The manager switched it up and showed a side of himself rarely seen and dropped some of the bigger names in his team.

Doing that and bringing in players in form and more deserving of a place in the side paid dividends.

He may be tempted in the future, but Luhukay needs to avoid fielding a team of stars in the future ahead of the chemistry his current side has.

Adam Reach was playing deeper at the start of the season was increasingly infective.

That resulted in him getting dropped before the introduction of Barry Bannan and Joey Pelupessy in the central midfield places.

With Reach getting back in the team he has been positioned in a more advanced area and has scored two world-class goals that earned him the personal accolade of September’s PFA Fans’ Championship Player of the Month.

That proves he is more of a threat in an advanced position, and Luhukay needs to avoid making the mistake of playing him in a deeper role.

It could be argued that Glenn Loovens and Jordan Rhodes left the club too soon despite their form from last season.

Sheffield Wednesday fans had not seen the best of the striker before his loan move to Norwich and Loovens was released and moved to Sunderland on a free.

They are two players who were crucial last term and despite their recent upturn in form, could have played a big part this term, especially when a bad run inevitably hits them again.

Both are in decent form for their new clubs, and Luhukay could feel he was too hasty in letting them go.

He will need to learn from that mistake with his current players if he is to keep a settled side together for longer.
