Michael Smith's Rotherham United future is yet to be determined, with the 30-year-old coming to the end of his deal at the New York Stadium this month.

In conversation with The Star, Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart revealed that Smith has been offered a sizeable offer to remain with the Yorkshire club.

A more recent report from The Star claims that Sheffield Wednesday are monitoring his situation, whilst there is also Championship interest in him.

Here, we take a look at three Michael Smith replacements that the Millers should consider if the Millers lose him this summer...

Will Grigg

Will Grigg enjoyed a successful stint with the Millers last time out, and whilst he worked excellently next to Smith, he could be someone brought in to replace the 30-year-old.

Paul Warne has shown his admiration for Grigg in conversation with the Rotherham Advertiser, praising the impact he has had on his side during the 2021/22 campaign.

He went on to label the Northern Irish international as the "glue in our team" further displaying how impressed the Rotherham boss has been with him.

Cole Stockton

Netting 23 goals in 44 League One games in a struggling Morecambe side, Cole Stockton is someone whose 2021/22 campaign would justify a Championship move.

Proving once again to have a knack for scoring all sorts of goals, his physicality and link-up play have been just as impressive as his ability to emerge as a talismanic figure.

He also switches things up and is able to run in behind and see joy that way, with this unpredictability causing havoc in League One.

Alfie May

Like Stockton, Alfie May proved to be a consistent scorer of goals within a bottom half League One side.

The energetic forward, whose intelligent movement and relentlessness saw him emerge as a top performer in League One last year, also finished the campaign with 23 goals.

Clinical in the final third, and important when linking the play, May is someone who could cut it at Championship level.

It remains to be seen if a chance will be afforded to May, but if Championship interest is to surface, it is likely to come from a club with a smaller budget than the rest of the division.
