From play-off contenders to mid table also-rans, it hasn't been a campaign to remember for Owls fans.

They could have been forgiven for thinking their long exile from the top flight was drawing to a close after last season's heroics. They ploughed into the top six under Carlos Carvalhal and looked likely to do the same again.

With Jordan Rhodes joining permanently, goals looked likely, but his form has eclipsed that of his new employers. Instead of a promotion charge, they got a manager change and insecurity once again.

Hillsborough is a grand old ground, capable of hosting top flight football, but as Sheffield United battle for a play-off spot, their city rival languish in the bottom half, looking on in anger and embarrassment. Last season they were a division above their bitter enemies, now they're overtaken and left standing.

It isn't all doom and gloom though, Wednesday have plenty of factors they can point to as being crucial in their tough season. Here at FLW we look at three things we've learned about Sheffield Wednesday this season.

You can't account for injuries. The treatment room at Hillsborough has resembled a tube station at rush hour this season, with Gary Hooper and Fernando Forestieri notable absentees.

Those two alone could have easily fired the Owls higher up the division, but their injuries coupled with other absentees has decimated a promising season. They may have even cost Carlos Carvalhal his job, not that he's complaining in the Premier League.

Jordan Rhodes may as well have been given the middle name 'goals' as a child. His moniker became synonymous with hitting the back of the net, first at Huddersfield and then at Blackburn.

£10m might be a big sum, but for a guaranteed goal scorer? Surely a bargain.

Sadly, there's no such thing.

The change in manager brought absolutely nothing different in terms of results. The Owls still won a few, lost a few more then drew a couple, showing the sort of inconsistent from that keeps you in the bottom half of the table.

Has Jos Luhukay convinced enough to keep his position over the summer? Probably so, but having had enough month to make some changes, there's actually been nothing new in terms of outcome that Owls fans can cling to. That could be a huge worry.
