Nottingham Forest are currently unbeaten in seven Championship games and their supporters are excited at what the future might hold under recently appointed boss Aitor Karanka.

The Reds have stopped conceding goals in recent weeks and although the goalless draw with Sheffield United last weekend represented their third result of such a scoreline in succession, there is still a foundation for which Forest to build on.

The summer will undoubtedly be a big one for the Reds and it seems likely that the Forest boss will continue rebuilding his squad following a January transfer window where he signed 11 new recruits.

After years of boardroom misdemeanors the football club now looks to be back on the up and given Karanka's previous experience in the Championship, you wouldn't bet against Forest challenging for a place in the top six next season if the Spaniard is given time.

FLW writer Lee Clarke looks at the three main things that Karanka must ensure he does in the summer in order to ensure a better season in 2018/19...

Tobias Figueiredo, Jack Colback, Costel Pantilimon and Lee Tomlin have been fantastic loan additions for Nottingham Forest since arriving in January and they have all played a key part in the team's upturn in fortunes.

If the club is to progress next season they could really do without blending too many more new players into the squad and keeping the current regulars would be a really wise investment for the summer.

All four of the club's loan signings could realistically be signed and they would definitely enhance the club's promotion ambition next season.

Forest have several players out of contract during the summer and given Karanka's brutal nature of wielding the axe during January, it could spell bad news for certain players come the end of the season.

The ex-Middlesbrough boss offloaded a glut of players from the club and the likes of Chris Cohen, Jack Hobbs and David Vaughan are all out of contract during the summer meaning that some difficult decisions will need to be made.

If Forest are to continue to progress on the pitch Karanka must let his head rule his heart and ensure he does all he can to get the squad that he absolutely wants for next season.

With Daryl Murphy coming to the twilight of his career, Ben Brereton still young and finding his feet and Apostolos Vellios hardly the most prolific man in the league, it is fair to say that Nottingham Forest need to sign a striker during the summer.

If Forest are genuinely serious about pushing for a place in the play-offs next season then the club must do all they can to secure the services of a prolific talisman during the summer.
