Millwall narrowly missed out on relegation this summer. Without striker Lee Gregory’s goals, their situation could have been a whole lot worse.

Stoke City are the side that are heavily linked with the striker. According to the Sun, the move is almost at its conclusion, where Gregory will join the Potters very soon. The English forward is available on a free transfer in the summer after the expiration of his contract.

However, the Lions have offered a new deal to him, which has yet to be signed, fueling further speculation that he will leave the London club imminently. The Potters finished 16th in the table this season, but they will aim to be around the promotion places by the end of next season.

It's inevitable that the lure of potential Premier League football in the future will attract players like Lee Gregory away from Millwall. However, the grass isn't always greener on the other side...

Here are three potential replacements that Millwall should consider signing if Lee Gregory departs from The Den this summer.

Josh Magennis

Magennis scored a respectable 7 goals in a struggling Bolton Wanderers side last season and will be looking to get back to the Championship as soon as possible, whether that’s with Bolton Wanderers or another club.

The 28-year-old Northern Ireland international has played over 40 games for his national team, something that will attract potential buyers to attempt to gain his signature. Bolton Wanderers are currently struggling financially and will therefore be likely to accept any reasonable offer that comes in for the forward.

This signing would be a low risk and reasonably cheap purchase for Millwall, who do not have an endless pit of money. If Magennis can score a reasonable amount of goals for a side that came 23rd in the Championship last season, he could make a very good impact at Millwall, who will be looking to achieve a mid-table position next season after a disappointing last campaign at The Den.

Marc McNulty

The Scottish forward moved from Coventry City to Reading last summer after impressing in the 2017/18 season at the Sky Blues. This was after loan spells at Portsmouth and Bradford City when he was at Sheffield United between 2014 and 2017. The 26-year-old started his career at Scottish side Livingston before making the move to Sheffield.

However, McNulty has not had the chance to shine after being frozen out of the Royals’ first team. He’s shown in the past that he can score goals and Reading desperately need to slash their wage bill. If Millwall are to get McNulty, they will need to battle Scottish Premier League side Hibernian for his signature.

He would be a reasonably low-cost option, with his wages unlikely to be high. This could be a very shrewd move for the London side to make if they go ahead and sign the forward.

Jordan Hugill (loan)

Hugill started his league career at Port Vale in 2013 before moving on to Preston North End, where he impressed teams across the Premier League and Championship. He signed for West Ham in January 2018 in a £10m deal.

However, he only featured a few times for the Irons before going out on loan to Middlesbrough in the 2018-19 season where he featured regularly for the Teesside club.

Even though this move would only be a loan, this would be a very ambitious move for Millwall to make. The club should be willing to pay a reasonable portion of his high wages if that means getting Hugill for a whole season. His goals could be the difference between survival and relegation if Millwall have another poor season in the Championship.

Lee Gregory’s goals were very important for the London side in the 2018/19. He would leave a large void in the side if he does leave. Only an adequate replacement would be acceptable for the Lions fans.
