For Newcastle fans, the season so far has been everything that they would have expected at the start of it, a total blitz on the Championship.

The Magpies sit 2nd in the Championship standings after 25 games, however first placed Brighton and Hove Albion have a game in hand on Rafa Benitez' men, and sit two points ahead of them.

This will undoubtedly be disappointing for the St. James' Park faithful, who made some extraordinary signings in pre-season, the likes of Dwight Gayle and Matt Ritchie joining the Tyneside club in the summer.

This transfer window though, we think that Benitez needs to look at the other end of the spectrum, and scout fresh talent in League One rather than the high-profile talent of the top flight.

With that being said, here, FLW writer George Harbey identifies THREE League One stars that Newcastle United must look to sign in January...

Josh Morris

The 25-year-old has been in exceptional form for Graham Alexander's Scunthorpe United this term, and is perhaps the most talented midfielder in the third tier.

The versatile midfielder, who can operate as either a winger or an attacking midfielder, has scored a fabulous 16 goals in 26 games for the Iron this term.

Many would think that Morris is unable to make the step up to the Championship, however when a player like himself is in as good a form as he is at the moment, it is definitely worth the risk to lure him to Tyneside.

Ben Stevenson

The highly-rated Coventry City player has attracted the interest of many Championship outfits this term, and has been the shining light for the Sky Blues, in their turmoil of a season.

Brentford are the latest club to declare their interest in the 19-year old, who has made 22 appearances for the Midlands club this season, scoring twice.

Newcastle have a fine reputation for utilising youth and growing them into exceptional players, and Stevenson definitely has the potential to be a real star in midfield for the Geordies in the future.

Zach Clough

A player destined for the top; Clough has been in excellent form ever since coming through the youth ranks at hometown club Bolton Wanderers.

The 21-year-old has scored 21 goals in 55 games for the Trotters, with 8 goals coming this term in what looks likely to be a formidable promotion push for Phil Parkinson's men.

Clough was attracting the likes of Bristol City and Huddersfield Town last term, and would be a creditable asset for Rafa Benitez' men.

So... What do you think Newcastle fans? Would you like to see any of these 3 selections join Newcastle? Who else should you sign in January? Leave your thoughts in the comments below!
