Sheffield Wednesday have had a mixed start to the season after narrowly missing out on promotion last year.

The Owls fell just short in the play-off final, losing 1-0 to Hull at Wembley. Carlos Carvalhal had done a superb job to get them to that position though and the fans will be expecting to kick on this year.

A strong summer of recruitment meant that spirits were high going into the new season. Players such as Steven Fletcher, Almen Abdi, Adam Reach and Will Buckley all bring talent to the table but also experience of the English game.

Wednesday have picked up 17 points from their opening 11 games, which is fairly modest by their own admission. It is still early days though and promotion ultimately has to be the aim.

Carlos Carvalhal will have another transfer window to bring in new players. League One is a good market for talent and if players are standing out in the third tier, it is likely that they will be comfortable to make the step up to the Championship.

There is a certain pull about Sheffield Wednesday with its ambition, exciting manager and large fan following so League One players would probably jump at the chance to move to Hillsborough.

Here are THREE League One players that Sheffield Wednesday should consider...

Chris Solly

Sheffield Wednesday's weakest area is arguably the full back regions. They certainly don't have strength in depth there. Charlton's vice-captain Chris Solly fits the bill here.

Naturally a right-sided full back who can also operate on the left, Solly is a solid, assured defender with vast amounts of experience. The 25-year-old has played over 200 senior games for the Addicks - predominantly in the Championship - and has previously been courted by a number of Premier League sides.

The former England youth international has twice won Charlton's Player of the Year and he is too good to be plying his trade in League One.

Josh Vela

Sheffield Wednesday could try to pry academy product Josh Vela away from Bolton by offering him a promotion-chasing Championship campaign.

The versatile 22-year-old was one of the few shining lights during Bolton's dim season last year. Vela is a central midfielder who is also capable of playing at full back. With time still very much on his side, Vela is a promising young player who already has plenty of experience in the Championship.

He would be a good squad addition with a view to breaking into the starting line-up.

Marcus Maddison

It's remarkable that a bigger club hasn't snapped up Peterborough playmaker Marcus Maddison yet.

He is most comfortable as a winger or an attacking midfielder but can also play at left back. After being released by Newcastle as a youngster due to his poor attitude, Maddison earned a route back into professional football with a special spell at Gateshead. The 23-year-old is applying himself now and already has 5 goals and 5 assists for Posh this season after impressing with plenty of goals already for the League One side.

A bigger club needs to snap him up and he would definitely add some creativity to Sheffield Wednesday's ranks.
