Stoke City will be desperate to improve on what was a dismal 2018/19 campaign this season under Nathan Jones.

They crashed to a 16th place finish despite being made convincing pre-season favourites to win promotion after bringing in a host of exciting signings in the summer.

But they appear to be wasting very little time putting things right as five new faces arrived at the Bet365 Stadium at once earlier this week as Jones looks to leave his mark on the squad.

Nick Powell arrived from Wigan Athletic on a free transfer whilst goalkeeper Adam Davies and centre-back Liam Lindsay made the move from newly promoted Barnsley on a free deal and an undisclosed deal respectively.

Polishing off the quintet were reliable Queens Park Rangers midfielder Jordan Cousins and former Millwall striker Lee Gregory.

It marks a sizeable change in the squad and the sort that could have a big knock-on effect on other summer deals as well as the dynamics of the club.

Here, then, are THREE effects that could be felt as a result of this deal...

Butland leaves

This always seemed likely but with Davies' arrival confirmed it now seems an inevitability.

The Welshman has proven himself in the Championship before and will have been signed with first-team responsibilities in mind.

Considering they will most likely get at least £20million for Butland I imagine Jones will be keen to get the deal done and to reinvest those funds.

Afobe steps up

Stoke's attacking options last season underperformed massively, with the club scoring just 45 league goals throughout the campaign.

The biggest disappointment of the bunch was Benik Afobe, who scored just eight times in 45 appearances having arrived from Wolves for around £12million.

With a proven Championship striker like Lee Gregory breathing down his neck, it is a real possibility that the former Arsenal man finally receives the kick-start he needs.

Expectations rise

After the end of last season, morale amongst the fans was rather low.

But, having landed five proven Championship players, expectations for the coming season will surely begin to rise once again.

Jones has said for a while that he will need time to shape his squad and with these arrivals he has taken a big step towards that goal and the fans will know it too.
