Garry Monk looks set to appoint James Beattie as one of his first-team coaches in the near future according to the Yorkshire Post.

Beattie has reportedly left his role with Birmingham, and is edging closer to linking up with Monk once again at Hillsborough.

The former Southampton striker worked with the 40-year-old both at Birmingham City and Leeds United earlier in their managerial career.

Sheffield Wednesday have started this year's campaign brightly, and will be hoping that they can continue to keep the pressure on league-leaders West Brom.

The Owls currently sit fifth in the league table, and will be hoping to build on some impressive showings as they take on Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

With Beattie set to arrive, Monk will be hoping that the former Premier League man can make a positive impact on his current crop of players.

We take a look at THREE knock-on effects that this recent update will have.

He could get the best out of Steven Fletcher

Fletcher already has five goals to his name this season, and is currently Sheffield Wednesday's top scorer.

The Scotsman will be keen to add to that tally, and with Beattie's guidance, he will be confident in doing just that as the season progresses.

Beattie has worked with the likes of Chris Wood and Che Adams in the past, and has definitely improved their records in front of goal.

So his arrival at Hillsborough could certainly benefit Fletcher who has already started this year's campaign brightly.

Could it lead to January departures?

Beattie had an impressive record in front of goal during his playing career, and he'll know exactly what it takes to play consistently to a high standard in the top-flight.

So Monk will be keen to touch on his judgement both in a game situation and on the training ground, and if Beattie doesn't like what he sees from a striker, then they could be heading for the exit door.

Sheffield Wednesday already have a number of strikers on their books, and Monk might be tempted to move some of them on in the January transfer window, especially if Beattie doesn't think they're up to scratch.

Promotion could be a real possibility

Not many of the Hillsborough faithful would have predicted that this season could be one where they mount a challenge for promotion to the Premier League.

Monk's side are currently just three points adrift of top spot in the Championship though, and adding a coach with Beattie's experience of playing at a high level will only boost their chances of coming away from games with a positive result.

It's a smart move by Monk to bring him into his coaching set up once again.
