Despite securing back-to-back victories in the Championship earlier this month, Stoke City manager Nathan Jones is once again under a considerable amount of pressure at the bet365 Stadium following a slump in form by his side.

The Potters, who are currently in the relegation zone in the second-tier, have lost their last two league games and now face the daunting prospect of having to face league leaders West Bromwich Albion on Monday.

If Stoke suffer a heavy defeat to the Baggies, it will be intriguing to see whether they make a decision on Jones' future at the club.

According to The Sun (31 October, page 58), the Potters are reportedly eyeing up a potential swoop for Jose Gomes.

The 49-year-old, who was recently sacked by Reading following a poor run of results in the Championship, is thought to be keen on making an immediate return to management.

Here, we take a look at THREE knock-on effects that Stoke could experience if they do indeed appoint Gomes as their new manager...

Championship survival

Having guided Reading to a 20th place finish in the Championship last season, Gomes will be confident in his ability to prevent Stoke from suffering relegation to the third-tier.

Given that the Potters arguably have a better squad in comparison to the Royals' roster last year, it would be a major shock if they continue to under-perform over the coming months.

Providing that Gomes can hit the ground running at the bet365 Stadium, Stoke will have a great chance of preserving their second-tier status.

A complete overhaul of their squad in January

Given that the majority of the players at Stoke are failing to deliver the goods this season on a consistent basis, Gomes may look to completely overhaul the club's squad during the upcoming transfer window.

If the former Reading boss can get his recruitment spot on in January, he may be able to create the foundations needed to achieve a great deal of success in the future with the Potters.

Relegation to the third-tier

Whilst Gomes did lead Reading to survival earlier this year, his overall record at the Madejski Stadium was far from impressive.

Before being sacked by the Royals earlier this month, the former Rio Ave boss only managed to win nine of his 38 games in charge.

If he cannot learn from his mistakes, Gomes may struggle to prevent Stoke from being relegated to the third-tier which is a scenario that their supporters will be desperate to avoid.
