Reading have re-signed Matt Miazga on a season-long loan from Chelsea, after impressing Jose Gomes and the Berkshire side's supporters in the second half of last season.

The USA international formed a very good partnership with Liam Moore in the 2018/19 season after the departure of Tiago Ilori to Sporting Lisbon.

Along with last season's fellow loanees including Emiliano Martinez, Lewis Baker, Ovie Ejaria and Nelson Oliveria, the Royals managed to stay up in the Championship.

This was something that didn't look likely in the first half of the 2018/19 campaign under Paul Clement. However, these signings prevented the Royals from falling to League One and in to further financial trouble.

Joao Virginia, Michael Morrison, Charlie Adam and now Matt Miazga have all signed for Reading this summer so far. The club will be looking to make even more signings before the closure of the transfer window on 8th August.

Here are three knock-on effects on Reading with the club securing the loan of Miazga.

A better defensive record

Reading are currently lacking any new attacking signings and could struggle to score numerous goals in the Championship next season if they do not buy the players they need to create and take chances.

This makes it all the more important that Reading have signed Miazga on loan again to form a great partnership with Liam Moore in central defence.

Between them, the centre-back partnership defended admirably last season and formed a better duo than Ilori and Moore ever did when the Portuguese player was at the club.

The Royals conceded 66 goals from 46 games in the Championship last season, which isn't too bad for a club who finished in 20th place. However, Miazga was one of the reasons why the Royals didn't concede even more goals.

Fan optimism and subsequent increase of ticket sales

Matt Miazga is undoubtedly one of Reading's most popular players, after his performances last season helped the Royals steer clear of relegation last season. This signing has given supporters the belief that Reading can be competitive in the league this season.

This was optimism that was lacking earlier on in the summer, with the club having difficulty with their soft transfer embargo. The Royals desperately needed new players after the departure of a number of loanees who had made a big impact on the club in the second half of last season.

If Reading manage to make the further signings that they need, along with Miazga, this could help increase season ticket sales after a dismal couple of seasons at the Madejski Stadium.

Three at the back

Former Birmingham City captain Michael Morrison has also arrived at the Madejski Stadium after signing a two year contract with the Royals this summer. Would Morrison really come to Reading to sit on the bench?

It's likely that he would be behind Miazga in the pecking order, after the American's performances in the second half of last season making him a fan favourite. Captain Liam Moore is almost guaranteed a start against Sheffield Wednesday to make a pairing of Moore and Miazga once again.

The Royals could also play three at the back, something they have already done under Jose Gomes last season when playing away at clubs near the top of the Championship table. It gives Gomes different options with these two signings at the club.
