Norwich City have got off to a strong start to the Championship season as they aim to bounce back from their relegation from the Premier League last term, with the Canaries sat in 3rd place in the table.

The Canaries have managed to re-find their form as Daniel Farke has shifted around his squad and added some extra quality to his side to help them challenge for promotion. Norwich managed to keep hold of most of their key players in the summer one of which was Kenny McLean who had interested Rangers.

Farke had described the midfielder as ‘irreplaceable’ in the summer, but it is being reported that Rangers are now ready to come back in with a fresh offer for the 28-year-old in January.

McLean is thought to be interested in the move as he aims to play his way into Scotland’s starting line-up for the Euros in the summer, per The Scottish Sun.

Quiz: Did these 17 Norwich City players ever actually score a league goal for the club?

Were McLean to leave the club, it would potentially leave Farke with one or two issues to sort out and allow some players more chances to feature in his potential absence.

With that in mind, we take a look at THREE potential knock-on effects selling McLean could have for Norwich…

Mario Vrancic could play a more important role

So far this season, Mario Vrancic has made just one start for Norwich in the Championship, despite having been an integral part of the Canaries side that won promotion from the English second tier in 2018/19 with the 31-year-old hitting ten goals and providing seven assists (Sofascore).

Increased competition for places with the arrival of Oliver Skipp from Tottenham Hotspur has meant that Farke has used Vrancic as more of an impact player from the bench. The midfielder, though, could become more of an important player for them if McLean leaves with him being able to offer a similar type of box to box presence in midfield.

The midfielder puts up fewer tackles and interceptions than McLean, but he also offers more breaking forwards from the middle of the field. So, it could see him come into the side more often and offer more of an attacking threat.

Alex Tettey renaissance

Another potential impact McLean leaving could have is the chance for Alex Tettey to really come back into the fold for the Canaries.

The experienced midfielder has seen his impact over the last few years affected by injury troubles at times, but he still made 30 Premier League appearances last season.

The former Norway international has so far this season only made one Championship appearance which came last time out against Swansea City. If he can stay injury free then McLean leaving would potentially open up a space in the side for him to come in and provide more protection to the defence.

More pressure placed on Oliver Skipp

McLean leaving the club would see even more pressure fall on Skipp’s shoulders after the midfielder’s excellent start to life with the Canaries. The 20-year-old has become one of Norwich’s most important players since arriving from Tottenham on loan for the season.

Skipp is putting up impressive numbers averaging 2.3 tackles per game as well as maintaining an 88% passing accuracy (Sofascore).

If Norwich are to earn promotion it is vital he continues to produce the same level of performances, and were McLean to leave, it would mean any injury to the 20-year-old would leave Farke’s side short of defensive talents in midfield.
